한국사회 다문화교육 주요 이슈에 대한 고찰: 이주민의 요구를 중심으로

국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 한국사회의 다문화교육 확산 과정에서 어떠한 이슈가 우선적으로 강조되어야 하는지 제시하는 것이다. 이를 위해 한국에 이주하여 비교적 장기간 체류하며 다문화 교육 관련 활동을 하고 있는 다양한 국가 출신 이주민 10명과 심층면담을 실시하였다. 이들의 입장에서 시급하다고 생각하는 다문화교육의 주요 이슈는 무엇인지 이들의 경험과 현재 한국 사회의 다문화 교육 논의와 관련지어 살펴보고자 하였다. 먼저, 이주민 배경과 관련하여 한국인들이 갖고 있는 편견이나 고정관념이 개선되어야 하며, 이주민들과의 상호작용 과정에서 타문화에 대한 관심이나 호기심에 대한 적절한 표현 방법, 개별 접촉 과정에서 지켜야 할 태도 교육이 필요하다. 그리고 일반적으로 다문화교육을 통해 강조되고 있는 문화간 차이나 다양한 문화에 대한 소개보다는 인간으로서 존중받아야 하는 보편적인 권리에 대한 교육이 우선시 되어야 함을 알 수 있었다. 또한 이주민들은 한국사회에 이주하여 정착하는 과정에서 일방적인 동화의 대상이 아닌 실천하는 주체로서 이해되어야 한다. 결국, 타문화 소개나 이주민 적응 지원 위주의 다문화교육 내용에 앞서 이주민과의 상호작용 과정에 대한 교육, 보편적 권리 존중, 이주민 개인의 실천 과정에 대한 이해 교육 등이 우선되어야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study aimed to explore what issues were firstly emphasized, while multicultural education has been spread out and settled in Korea recently. For this, I conducted in-depth interviews with 10 migrants who have stayed in Korea for relatively longer periods and been active in multicultural education related projects. Through the interviews, I attempted to find out which aspects were firstly developed based on their experiences and current academic discussion on multicultural education in Korea. First of all, stereotypes and prejudices on migrants' backgrounds held by Koreans should be corrected and better ways to express interests and curiosities on migrants' cultures and better attitudes for individual interactions should be educated. In addition, we need to emphasize universal human rights deserved for every human beings prior to introducing cultural differences and diverse cultures. Last, migrants should be understood as agents who are doing active practices rather than subjects of one sided assimilation, while they are migrating and adjusting to the Korean society. In sum, we firstly need education for the interacting with individual migrants, deserving universal human rights, and understanding the process of individual migrants' active practices, prior to introducing other cultures and support for migrants' adjustments.
