상대적 진리에 관한 맥팔레인의 화용론적 의미론에 관한 고찰

국문 초록

서양철학 전통에서 진리에 대한 상대주의는 기피되어야 하는 입장으로 오랫동안 낙인찍혀 왔었다. 그러나 21세기에 들어 분석철학자들을 중심으로 상대적진리에 대한 논의가 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 그 중심에 존 맥팔레인(John MacFarlane)의 상대적 진리에 관한 화용론적 의미론이 있다. 21세기 분석철학에서논의되는 진리 상대주의는 전체적(global) 상대주의가 아닌 국소적(local) 상대주의로서 국소적 상대주의는 모든 종류의 문장이 아니라 특정 종류의 문장(미래에 관한 문장, 인식적 양상성, 취향에 관한 문장 등)만 상대적 진리값을 갖는다는 입장이다. 맥팔레인 역시 국소적 진리 상대주의를 옹호한다. 그런데 맥팔레인은 기존의 맥락 주의 의미론은 상대적 진리개념에 대한 적절한 설명을 제공하지 못한다고 비판한다. 맥팔레인은 자신의 평가에 민감한 맥락주의 의미론만이 상대적 진리개념에 대한 적절한 설명을 제공할 수 있다고 주장한다. 맥팔레인의 평가에 민감한 맥락주의 이론의 가장 특이한 점은 화용론에 기반한 의미론이라는 것이다. 맥팔레인이 제시하는 가장 중요한 논거는 평가에 민감한 맥락주의 의미론만이 상대적 진리와 관련된 “화행(speech act)”을 가장 잘 설명할 수 있다는 것이기 때문이다. 본 논문은 맥팔레인의 평가에 민감한 맥락주의를 옹호하고자 한다. 특히 맥팔레인의 이론이 그와 경쟁상대에 있는 내용 상대주의나 비지표적 맥락주의보다 우월한 이론이라고 주장할 것이다.

영문 초록

The topic of this paper is the semantic and pragmatic treatment of the nature of relative truth by John MacFarlane. Despite the long-held tradition in Western philosophy against relativism about truth, the topic has attracted much attention in the 21st century analytic philosophy. Relativism here means local relativism, according to which only certain kinds of sentences (e.g. those about future, epistemic modality, tastes, etc.) have truth values relatively. MacFarlane defends local relativism, but he argues that most contextualist semantic theories developed so far failed to offer a correct analysis of the notion of relative truth. According to MacFarlane, only his assessment-sensitive contextualism can offer a correct semantic and pragmatic account of relativism about truth. I will argue that the most striking feature of MacFarlane’s assessment-sensitive relativism is its pragmatics oriented semantic analysis of relative truth. That is to say, the most important argument offered in favor of his assessment-sensitive contextualism is that only assessment-sensitive contextualism can make sense of speech acts such as assertion and retraction associated with relative truth. I will argue for MacFarlane’s assessment-sensitive relativism. I will argue that his theory is superior to other types of contextualism such as content relativism and nonindexical contextualism.
