플라톤의 “비유”이야기 속의 인식론과 문화교육적 논의

국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 플라톤의 선분의 비유와 동굴의 비유 속에 나타난 인식론을 고찰하여 오늘날 문화인의 삶의 방향에 대한 시사점을 얻고자 한다. 플라톤의 선분의 비유와 동굴의 비유에서의 인식상태를 개인적 의견, 객관적 의견, 증명된 지식 그리고 지혜의 단계로 구분하였다. 이러한 단계를 문화인의 정신발전 단계와 대응하여 문화인의 5단계로 제안하였다. ‘1단계 문화인’은 짐작과 추측에 의한 개인적 의견의 원리로 삶을 살아가고, ‘2단계 문화인’은 소신과 신념에 의한 객관적인 의견을 삶의 원리로 살아간다. 그리고 ‘3단계 문화인’은 추론적 인식을 통하여 증명된 지식을 삶의 원리로 삼고 살아가며, ‘4단계 문화인’은 다양한 지식 사이의 관련성을 하나의 관점에서 볼 수 있는 변증법적 인식을 삶의 원리로 삼는다. 마지막으로 통합적인 최고의 진리에 대한 깨달음을 터득한 ‘5단계 문화인’은 공동체의 행복한 삶을 위하여 타자가 가치 있는 삶을 살 수 있도록 도움을 주는 사람이다. 그러므로 이 문화인은 낮은 단계에서 높은 단계의 문화인으로 이끄는 전문가로 활동하는 사람을 의미한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to propose - based on a synopsis of Plato s Analogy of the Divided Line and the Allegory of the Cave - implications for a development of a cultured person. Basing on the Analogy of the Divided Line and the Allegory of the Cave , four levels of insight were analyzed: personal opinions, objective belief, mathematical reasoning and philosophical understanding (wisdom). These levels correspond to mental stages in the development of cultured persons. The first-phase-cultured person s insight is limited to personal opinion and speculation. The second-phase-cultured person possesses the belief that the principles of living are relatively objective. The third-phase-cultured person gains knowledge through inferential thinking. The forth-phase-cultured person gains direct insight into the essence of ideas and lives in wisdom. Finally, a fifth phase is postulated, basing on the Allegory of the Cave : The cultured person does not rest on his insights but feels the obligation to teach the persons who are still living on lower levels of insight. Doing so, the fifth-phase-cultured person practices as cultural education expert.
