본 연구는 금강 중류역(공주·대전·세종·청주)에 분포하는 백제 석축산성을 대상으로 GIS 기반 공간 분석과 고고학적 유형 분석을 통해 백제의 지방 통치 체계와 방어 전략을 고찰하였다. 이를 위해 군집 분석, 커널 밀도 분석, 가시권 분석 등의 정량적 분석 기법과 축조기법의 유형화를 병행하여 산성들의 공간적 분포와 특성을 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 대상 산성들은 입지 조건(지형, 해발고도)과 산성의 규모 및 구조적 특징에 따라 몇 개 군집으로 분류되는 양상을 보였다. 커널 밀도 분석을 통해 금강 본류와 지류 합류부 등 교통상의 요충지를 중심으로 산성들이 밀집 분포하는 경향이 관찰되었다. 가시권 분석 결과, 산성들 간 상호 가시성이 높아 서로를 직접 관찰할 수 있는 유기적인 방어망을 형성하였음이 드러났다. 아울러 편축식에서 편축식·협축식 병용으로의 축조기법 변천을 바탕으로 한 시기별 축성 양상과 국경 방어 거점과 지방 통치 거점이라는 기능적 차별성이 나타났다. 이와 같은 분석 결과는 백제 산성 축성이 지방 통치 체계의 변화 및 방어 전략의 발전 과정과 밀접하게 연관되어 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구는 정량적 분석 기법과 고고학 자료를 유기적으로 결합함으로써 백제 산성 연구에 새로운 해석의 틀을 모색하였으며, 향후 고고학 연구에서 전통적 방법론과 디지털 기술의 균형 잡힌 결합을 통한 접근 가능성을 제시한 점에서도 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This study explores the spatial distribution and construction techniques of Baekje stone fortresses in the mid-Geumgang River region, including Gongju, Daejeon, Sejong, and Cheongju, to better understand Baekje’s local governance and defense strategies. Using GIS based methods kernel density estimation, K-means clustering, and viewshed analysis alongside typological analysis, the study identifies spatial patterns and chronological developments in fortress construction. Results show that fortresses cluster near major transportation hubs, particularly river confluences, and exhibit high intervisibility, indicating a coordinated defensive network. Typological analysis suggests a transition from early single-faced (Type I) to later mixed single/double-faced (TypeⅡ) constructions, reflecting shifts in administrative priorities and defense needs. This research demonstrates that Baekje’s fortress construction was strategically aligned with regional control and evolving defense systems. The integration of digital spatial analysis with archaeological typology offers a new framework for interpreting ancient fortifications and highlights the value of combining traditional and digital methods in archaeological research.
