야담 속 혼인 문제에 대한 시각과 의미

국문 초록

조선의 건국 이후, 혼인과 가족제도에 대대적인 변화가 일어나게 되었다. 그러한 의도는 사족 남성이 고안한 가부장제의 확립과 동시에 여성의 지위를 재조정하는 방향으로 작동했고, 남성과 그가 속한 가문의 성공이라는 하나의 목적을 지향했다. 혼인에 대한 이 현실의 시각은 혼인 문제를 그려낸 야담의 핵심적 작화력(作話力)으로 기능한 것으로 보인다. 혼인과 밀접하게 관련된 결연(結緣)이라는 화소가 야담에서 상당한 비중을 차지한다는 점에서, 그 향유에 보이는 적극성은 곧 문제의식의 민감성을 의미한다. 이에 각 이야기는 혼인 문제를 예리하게 인식하고, 그 해결을 위한 기대지평을 적극 담아냈다. 중혼 문제가 처첩 분간과 적서 판별이라는 예민한 문제를 해결하는 방향으로, 극심한 빈곤에 의한 혼인의 불성립 문제가 외부 조력의 적극적 개입을 통해 해소되는 방향으로 서사화된다는 점, 즉 혼인 문제의 두 가지 쟁점에 대한 서사적 주목이 해결 지향의 구조를 보인다는 점에서 그러하다. 해결 지향 구조를 표방한 서사적 문법은 야담이 내장한 사대부적 지향과 밀접하게 연관된다. 이는 혼인의 개량을 통해 견고한 가족 구조를 구축하고자 했던 사족 남성의 의도가 작동한 결과였다. 따라서 혼인 문제에 대한 야담의 주목은 곧 사족 남성이 계획하고 고안한 ‘가(家)’라는 체제의 확립과 그 안정적인 운영이라는 의도와 목적이 긴밀하게 관여되어 있다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

Marriage issues are explored from various angles in yadam. This essay focuses on the problems that arise within marriage as portrayed in such stories. After the founding of the Joseon Dynasty, the marriage system was reformed according to the intentions of the scholar-gentry men who led the new regime. With the rise of Neo-Confucian ideology and its emphasis on a clan-based family system, marriage and family structures underwent significant transformation. This transformation was driven by the desire to establish a patriarchal order, planned by elite men, and it functioned by redefining and lowering the status of women within the household. This patriarchal perspective on marriage seems to have functioned as a ability to make a story[作話力] in yadam stories that deal with marital issues. One of the most commonly found motifs across various yadam collections, widely enjoyed by many readers, is the formation of a connection[結緣]. This frequency suggests that marital issues have been a consistent and deeply explored theme within yadam. The active consumption of such narratives reflects a high level of social sensitivity and awareness toward the problems of marriage. Each story shows a keen awareness of realistic issues related to marriage and unfolds with a horizon of expectation for their resolution. For example, the issue of bigamy, a major concern in the early Joseon period, is typically narrated in a way that seeks resolution through the distinction between wife and concubine or the differentiation of legitimate versus illegitimate offspring. In the late Joseon period, the main issue becomes the inability to marry due to severe poverty, which is resolved in the narratives through active external intervention. In both cases, the stories are structured with a resolution-oriented framework. This resolution-oriented structure is closely tied to the elite men-class ideology embedded within yadam. Despite the varied problems and narrative approaches, the underlying theme remains the same: the resolution of these marital issues ultimately reflects the intentions of elite men who sought to reform the institution of marriage. In this sense, the two central issues in Joseon marriage—the controversy over bigamy and the failure of marriage formation—are eventually linked to the establishment and stable operation of the Family(家), which was planned and constructed by the elite men class.
