국문 초록

고려시대 승려 의복에 대한 규정과 가사 사여 시책의 의미를 분석하였다. 고려는 승려 복식을 규정하여 일반적으로 능, 라, 금(錦) 등의 직물을 금하였으나 승계와 승직을 받은 고승에게는 그 지위에 맞는 의복을 입도록 하였다. 이는 고려 불교계 내부에 형성된 제도적 위계를 시각적으로 드러내는 수단이었다. 가사의 사여는 국왕의 경사나 특정 고승에 대한 예우 차원에서 이루어졌다. 고려 전기에는 마납가사나 첩가사의 사여 기록이 주로 나타나며, 고려 후기에는 만수가사나 금란가사 등의 사여 사례가 증가한다. 이는 가사가 본래의 청빈한 수행 도구라는 의미를 넘어 세속적 권력과 연관된 예물로서의 성격을 띠게 되었음을 보여준다. 고려시대 가사 사여는 고승과 일반 승려 간의 물질적 격차를 형성하는 기제가 되었다. 이는 수행을 위해 속세를 떠난 승려의 본질적 평등주의와는 거리가 먼 현상으로, 고려 국왕이 제도화된 불교 위계 질서에 더해 물질적인 예우를 통해 고승을 우대하였음을 시사한다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the regulations on monastic attire and the significance of the policy of bestowing gasa(monastic robes) during the Goryeo Dynasty. While Goryeo generally prohibited monks from wearing clothes made of luxurious fabrics like neung(綾), ra(羅), geum(錦), and su(繡), high-ranking monks who received monastic titles and positions were permitted to wear attire befitting their status. This served as a visual representation of the institutional hierarchy within the Goryeo Buddhist community. The bestowal of gasa was conducted as a reward for national events or as a gesture of respect toward specific eminent monks. Records show that in the early Goryeo period, the bestowed robes were mainly manap gasa(磨衲袈裟) and cheop gasa(貼袈裟). In the later period, however, there was an increase in cases of mansu gasa(滿繡袈裟) and geumnan gasa(金襴袈裟) being granted. This suggests that the gasa transcended its original meaning as a tool for ascetic practice and took on the character of a secular gift linked to power. Ultimately, the bestowing of the gasa became a mechanism that created a material disparity between high-ranking monks and ordinary monks. This phenomenon, far removed from the fundamental egalitarianism of a monk who has left the secular world for spiritual practice, indicates that the Goryeo king, in addition to the institutionalized Buddhist hierarchy, gave special material treatment to eminent monks.
