일제강점기 웅변서적 연구 - 유형별 검토 및 사회적·교육적 함의를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 일제강점기 웅변서적을 대상으로 다음과 같은 내용을 고찰하였다. 첫째, 웅변서적 발간 현황 및 개괄적 특징, 둘째, 웅변서적의 유형별 검토 및 분석, 셋째, 웅변서적의 사회적·교육적 함의 등이다. 이러한 연구 과정을 통해 일제강점기 웅변서적의 현황과 그 위상을 조명하고자 했다. 실제 분석 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, ‘웅변서적 발간 현황 및 개괄적 특징’에서는 먼저 총 51편의 웅변서적들을 발굴하여 표로 정리하였다. 또한 국가별, 유형별, 문체별, 저자별, 출판사별 빈도를 통해 개괄적인 특징을 살펴보았다. 둘째, ‘웅변서적의 유형별 검토 및 분석’에서는 구성상 1) 이론 중심 서적, 2) 이론편과 실제편 혼합 서적, 3) 웅변·연설집 등으로 분류하여 각각의 특징을 살폈다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같이 정리할 수 있다. 먼저 ‘이론 중심’ 서적은 웅변의 일반 원리를 다룬 서적과 일상생활의 공적 말하기 규범을 제시하는 서적으로 대별된다. 또한 ‘이론편과 실제편 혼합’으로 구성한 서적은 웅변의 이론뿐만 아니라, 명연설이나 분야별 웅변 사례 등도 수록하고 있다. ‘웅변·연설집’의 경우는, 독립운동 및 민족의식 고취 내용, 일본 정책 선전 및 국책 내용, 해외 웅변·연설 번역집 등 세 가지 유형의 웅변문을 싣고 있다. 셋째, 웅변서적의 사회적·교육적 함의를 분석하였다. 이에 대해서는 ‘시대 변화와 사상 전달을 위한 웅변’과 ‘자기계발과 입신양명을 위한 웅변교육’이라는 측면에서 살펴보았다. 여기에서 웅변이 정치적 도구뿐만 아니라, 개인의 사회적 성공을 위한 필수 기술로도 인식되었음을 확인할 수 있다. 일제강점기에는 웅변이 중요한 사회적 언변 기술로 인식되었다. 또한 일제강점기 초기에는 웅변서적이 민족의식 고취와 독립운동, 계몽운동의 수단으로 활용되었다. 그러나 중후기로 가면서 다양한 분야의 웅변 기술을 제공하는 실용적인 웅변서들이 발간되었다. 즉 웅변이 사회생활의 의례적인 말하기까지 포함하는 보다 광범위한 의미로 확산되는 현상을 보인다. 본고는 일제강점기 웅변서적들을 종합적으로 분석하여, 웅변이 어떻게 개념화되고, 실천되었으며, 변화되었는지를 역사적 맥락에서 조망했다. 이를 통해, 당대 웅변서적의 사회적·교육적 의미를 조명했다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.

영문 초록

This study examines oratory books published during the Japanese colonial period in Korea, with a particular focus on their classification and socio-educational implications. The research centers on three key aspects: (1) the publication status and general characteristics of oratory books, (2) the classification and analysis of these books by type, and (3) their broader social and educational implications. Through this examination, the study seeks to illuminate the historical status and significance of oratory literature from this era. First, the study identified a total of 51 oratory books, which were organized into tables and analyzed based on characteristics such as country of publication, structural type, rhetorical style, authorship, and publisher frequency. Second, the books were classified into three main types: (1) theory-centered books, (2) books combining theory and practice, and (3) collections of oratory and public speeches. Theory-centered books could be further divided into those addressing the general principles of oratory and those presenting norms for public speaking in everyday life. Books combining theory and practice included not only instructional theory but also exemplary speeches and thematic cases across various fields. Collections of oratory speeches typically contained texts aligned with one of the following categories: speeches promoting the independence movement and national consciousness, speeches disseminating Japanese state ideology and policy propaganda, and translated compilations of foreign oratory texts. Third, the study examined the socio-educational implications of these oratory books. Two key themes were explored: oratory as a vehicle for ideological transmission in response to changing times, and oratory education as a tool for personal development and upward social mobility. These findings reveal that oratory was not only regarded as a political tool but also recognized as an essential communicative skill for individual success. During the Japanese colonial period, oratory was perceived as a crucial form of social expression. In the early colonial years, oratory books were often used to foster national identity and support movements for independence and enlightenment. However, from the mid to late colonial period, more practical books began to emerge, providing applicable oratory skills for various fields. This shift reflected a broader expansion of the concept of oratory, encompassing formal, ceremonial, and everyday public speech. By conducting a comprehensive analysis of oratory books from the Japanese colonial period, this study highlights how oratory was conceptualized, practiced, and transformed within its historical context. In doing so, it sheds light on the socio-educational meanings embedded in these texts and contributes to a deeper understanding of their cultural and pedagogical significance.
