전승 한자음에서의 설·치음 뒤 j계 상향이중모음의 단모음화 과정 연구 - 『왜어유해』·『아학편』·『국한회어』 분석을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 18세기 말엽의 『왜어유해』, 1813년에 필사된 강경훈본의 『아학편』, 그리고 19세기 말엽의 『국한회어』를 대상으로, 『中世韓國漢字音訓集成』(권인한 2009)에 실린 전승 한자음에서의 설·치음 뒤 j계 상향이중모음의 단모음화 과정을 고찰한 것이다. 그리하여 살핀 주요 논의 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 18세기 말엽의 『왜어유해』에서는 설·치음 뒤 j계 상향이중모음의 단모음화가 거의 보이지 않는다. 설음 ‘ㄷ’은 또 ‘ㅑ(C), ㅠ(C)’와의 연쇄에서는 ‘ㄷ>ㅈ’형, ‘ㅕ(C)’와의 연쇄에서는 변화 전인 ‘ㄷ’형으로서, ‘ㄷ>ㅈ’의 변화 과정에서는 j계 상향이중모음별로의 유의미한 차이를 보인다. 둘째, 19세기 초엽의 『아학편』에서는 설·치음의 단모음화가 확산되어 감을, 그리고 그 과정에서 가령 ‘ㅈ’의 경우 ‘ㅈ+ㅛ(C)’와 ‘ㅈ+ㅗ(C)’ 간의 혼기형 비율은 53%가량이라면, ‘ㅈ+ㅕ(C)’와 ‘ㅈ+ㅓ(C)’ 간 혼기형은 발견되지 않는 등의 ‘ㅅ·ㅈ·ㅊ’의 단모음화 과정에서도 ‘ㅑ·ㅕ·ㅛ·ㅠ’별로의 순차성을 볼 수 있었다. 더 나아가 『아학편』에서는 ‘ㄷ’ 뒤 j계 상향이중모음은 대개 ‘ㅈ’으로 변화되었으나, 이들에서의 단모음화는 잘 나타나지 않는 것으로서, 설·치음의 단모음화 또한 경구개음으로 재음운화가 된 ‘ㅈ·ㅊ’ 뒤에서 먼저 진행이 되고, 이어 경구개음화된 ‘ㄷ>ㅈ’으로 확산되는 등의 계기성을 살펴 논한 것이다. 셋째, 19세기 말엽의 『국한회어』에서는 설·치음의 단모음화가 80% 이상이다. 여타 20%도 단모음화형과 혼기되는 것으로서, 그 혼기도 대부분은 단모음화형이면서 j계 상향이중모음형은 드물다. ‘ㄷ’ 뒤에서도 『국한회어』는 ‘ㄷ>ㅈ’으로의 변화 및 단모음화로의 재구조화가 완성되었음을 보게 되는데, 이러한 설·치음의 단모음화 과정들을 통해 본고에서는 ‘ㄷ’의 ‘ㅈ’으로의 변화 및 ‘ㄷ>ㅈ’의 단모음화로의 변화에 대한 계기성, 설·치음의 단모음화 과정에서 ‘ㅑ·ㅕ·ㅛ·ㅠ’별로의 순차성 등을 밝혀 논한 것이다.

영문 초록

This study examines the process of monophthongization of glide-initiated high front rising diphthongs (such as ㅑ, ㅕ, ㅠ) that follow dental and alveolar consonants in transmitted Sino-Korean pronunciations of Middle Korean. The analysis focuses on three representative works: 『Waeŏyuhae』(1781), 『Ahakpyeon』(1813), and 『Gukhanhoeŏ』(1895). The major findings are as follows. In 『Waeŏyuhae』 from the late 18th century, monophthongization following dental and alveolar consonants is scarcely observed. In particular, the dental consonant ‘ㄷ’ exhibits different phonological behaviors depending on the accompanying diphthong: in sequences with ‘ㅑ(C)’ and ‘ㅠ(C)’, it tends to shift to ‘ㅈ’ (ㄷ>ㅈ pattern), whereas in sequences with ‘ㅕ(C)’, it largely retains its original form. This suggests a meaningful distinction in the monophthongization process depending on the type of glide-initial rising diphthong involved. In 『Ahakpyeon』, from the early 19th century, the monophthongization of glide-initiated diphthongs following dental and alveolar consonants becomes more widespread. Within this progression, a gradual and sequential shift can be observed among the individual diphthongs ‘ㅑ’, ‘ㅕ’, ‘ㅛ’, and ‘ㅠ’. In particular, j-glide diphthongs following the dental consonant ‘ㄷ’ mostly exhibit a shift to ‘ㅈ’ (i.e., ㄷ>ㅈ), but actual monophthongization within these forms is rarely observed. By the late 19th century, as seen in 『Gukhanhoeŏ』, over 80% of cases involving dental and alveolar consonants display full monophthongization. The remaining 20% are mixed forms, showing coexistence of monophthongized and diphthongal variants. However, even in such mixed forms, the diphthongal variants with j-glide are notably rare—for instance, in the case of 石[H셕], the ratio of ‘셕’ to ‘석’ is 1:66, and for 節[H졀], ‘졀’ to ‘절’ is 3:47. In 『Gukhanhoeŏ』, the phonological restructuring of j-glide diphthongs following ‘ㄷ’ is completed, showing both the consonantal shift from ‘ㄷ’ to ‘ㅈ’ and the subsequent monophthongization. Through the monophthongization processes of dental and alveolar consonants examined in this study, it is possible to observe the phonological motivation underlying the ‘ㄷ>ㅈ’ shift as well as its connection to monophthongization. Additionally, the study reveals a sequential pattern of monophthongization across the different j-glide diphthongs—‘ㅑ’, ‘ㅕ’, ‘ㅛ’, and ‘ㅠ’—within the context of dental and alveolar consonants.
