국문 초록

조맹선의 독립운동은 평산의진, 포수단, 대한독립단, 광복군사령부 등이 잘 알려져 있다. 그가 독립운동에 본격적으로 뛰어든 것은 1905년 일제의 침략을 규탄하는 통문과 발문을 발표하면서부터다. 통문과 발문이 실질적인 효과를 거두지 못하자 1907년경 의병 참여했는데, 이때부터 시작된 그의 무장투쟁은 1920년 생을 마감하는 그 순간까지 계속되었다. 1910년 무렵 국외로 망명한 이후에는 이범윤과 함께 의병항쟁을 추진했다. 이범윤으로부터 참모원에 임명되어 서·북간도에서 의병을 모집했다. 1913년에는 몽강현에서 포영을 조직했는데, ‘포수단’의 토대를 다지는 활동이었다. 포수단이 본격적으로 시작된 때는 제1차 세계대전의 발발 이후인 1915년부터였다. 이때, 그는 무송현에 있는 백산학교에 머물렀는데, 윤세복·이진룡·차도선 등도 백산학교에 출입하며 의병을 지휘 했다. 윤세복이 무송현 경찰서에 구금된 뒤에는 이진룡과 함께 운산금광회사의 수송마차를 습격하는 등 활약했다. 1917년 5월 이진룡이 일경에 체포된 후에는 차도선 등과 충의사라는 비밀결사를 조직하고 ‘서울 진격’을 목표로 동지 규합 및 무기 확충에 노력했다. 이후 국내외에서 3·1운동이 일어나자 유하현 삼원포에서 대한독립단을 조직했다.

영문 초록

Jo Maeng-seon began to participate in the independence movement in earnest in 1905 when he published a letter and a preface denouncing the Japanese invasion. When the letter and the preface failed to have any real effect, he joined the Righteous Army around 1907. His armed struggle, which began at that time, continued until his death in 1920. After going into exile overseas around 1910, he promoted the Righteous Army struggle together with Lee Beom-yun. He was appointed to the Staff by Lee Beom-yun and recruited Righteous Army soldiers in the western and northern Gando regions. In 1913, he organized a Poyeong in Menggang-hyeon, which was an activity that laid the foundation for the 'Hunters Corps.' The Hunters Corps began in earnest in 1915 after the outbreak of World War I. At this time, he was staying at Baeksan School in Musong-hyeon, and Yun Se-bok, Lee Jin-ryong, and Cha Do-seon also visited Baeksan School and commanded the Righteous Army. After Yun Se-bok was detained at Musong-hyeon Police Station, he was active together with Lee Jin-ryong, such as attacking the transport carriage of Unsan Gold Mine Company. After Lee Jin-ryong was arrested by the Japanese police in May 1917, he organized a secret society called the Loyalty Society with Cha Do-seon and others, and worked to gather comrades and expand weapons with the goal of ‘advancing on Seoul.’ Later, when the March 1st Movement broke out at home and abroad, he organized the Korean Independence Corps.
