국문 초록

본 연구는 무용동작치료에서 ‘움직임’이 내담자의 내면을 반영하고 상징화하는 기호로 작용한다는 전제에서 출발하여, 그 의미화 과정을 기호학적 이론에 근거해 구조적으로 분석하고자 하였다. 기존의 동작 분석 체계인 Laban Movement Analysis (LMA)과 Kestenberg Movement Profile (KMP)은 움직임과 심리 간의 연관성을 설명하는 데 기여하였으나, 비언어적 상징성과 사회문화적 맥락, 해석자의 역할을 포함하는 이론적 틀은 미비한 상황이다. 이에 본 연구는 소쉬르(F. de Saussure), 퍼스(C. S. Peirce), 바르트(R. Barthes), 크리스테바(J. Kristeva)의 기호학 이론을 바탕으로, 무용동작이 어떻게 기표-기의-해석자의 삼항 구조 속에서 의미화되고, 아이콘(icon), 인덱스(index), 상징(symbol)의 기호 유형으로 분류되는지를 문헌연구를 통해 탐색하였다. 분석 결과, 무용동작은 내담자의 심리 상태와 감정을 반영하는 기호적 표현 수단으로 작용하며, 기호학적 분석 틀은 치료자에게 내담자의 정서와 무의식을 보다 정교하게 해석할 수 있는 임상적 도구로 기능할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 무용동작치료의 해석 가능성과 이론적 정당성을 확장하고, 예술치료 전반에서 기호학 기반 해석 모델 개발의 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This study aims to structurally analyze the process of movement signification in Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) from a semiotic perspective, based on the premise that bodily movement functions as a symbolic sign reflecting the client’s internal psychological states. While existing movement analysis systems such as Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) and Kestenberg Movement Profile (KMP) have contributed to understanding the relationship between movement and emotion, they remain limited in fully addressing nonverbal symbolism, socio-cultural contexts, and the role of the interpreter in the construction of meaning. Drawing on the semiotic theories of Ferdinand de Saussure, Charles S. Peirce, Roland Barthes, and Julia Kristeva, this study explores how bodily movements are signified through a triadic structure of signifier, signified, and interpreter, and categorized into iconic, indexical, and symbolic sign types. A conceptual literature review was conducted to establish this framework. The findings suggest that movement in DMT operates as a semiotic expression that conveys the client’s emotional and unconscious states. The proposed semiotic framework offers a practical interpretive tool for therapists to analyze and respond to movement-based expressions with enhanced clinical depth. This study expands the interpretive possibilities and theoretical foundation of DMT and provides a basis for developing semiotic models applicable across expressive arts therapies.
