Background: This study aimed to investigate the morphological changes of the intratemporal facial canal according to aging and temporal bone pneumatisation.
Materials and Methods: Three groups of patients, children under the age of 3 years, adults (older than 18 years) with poorly pneumatised mastoid cavity (PN), and adults with well pneumatised mastoid cavity (WN), were evaluated with three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of high-resolution computed tomography (CT). There were 10 subjects in each group. The 3D reconstructed images were obtained using the axial scans of CT with 3D reconstruction software.
Results: The length of the mastoid portion of the pneumatised group was longer than that of the children, followed by the poorly pneumatised group. The angle of the first genu of PN was wider than in the other groups. The chorda-facial angle narrowed with aging, and no significant difference was observed between the PN and WN groups.
Conclusions: The understanding of the morphological differences of the facial canal based on development and pneumatisation would help to prevent unintentional iatrogenic injury during otologic surgery.
