Facial nerve palsy can result from various etiologies, and although corticosteroids remain a cornerstone of treatment, a range of adjunctive therapies have been investigated and proposed. Among them, electrical stimulation (ES) has been considered a therapeutic approach aimed at promoting facial nerve regeneration and restoring function following paralysis. Numerous studies have examined the effects of ES on nerve regeneration in both human and animal models; however, its clinical efficacy in facial nerve recovery remains uncertain. Moreover, comprehensive reviews summarizing the therapeutic potential of ES in facial nerve disorders are scarce in the current literature. This review aims to assess the clinical effectiveness of ES in enhancing nerve regeneration and functional recovery following facial nerve injury. It also explores various ES modalities used in clinical studies, including implantable stimulators, electroacupuncture, and transcutaneous approaches, as well as their impact on synkinesis. Collectively, while ES demonstrates promising potential as an experimental treatment for facial nerve injury, the current level of evidence remains insufficient, indicating the need for further rigorous research.
