국문 초록

지금까지의 가사노동에 대한 연구는 측정과 규정, 주로 물리적 또는 신체적 수행에 초점을맞춰왔으며, 가사노동의 수행 과정과 수행량에 관심이 많았다. 이로 인해 가사노동에 대한 이해가 부분적이고 분절적인 형태를 보였다. 가사노동을 온전히 이해하기 위해서는 새로운 측면의 가사노동에 주목할 필요가 있으며, 그동안 간과되었던 정신적 스트레스나 책임의 부담 등가사노동의 정신적 부하에 주목할 필요가 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 인지노동 개념을 활용하여 가사노동 참여자들이 경험하는 정신적 부하를 분석하고자 한다. 총 7명의 13세 이하의 자녀를 둔 맞벌이 부부를 연구 대상자로 삼아, 육아를 포함한 가사노동의 경험을 심층 인터뷰를 수행하여 구체적인 맥락을 조명한다. 본 연구는 가사노동의 이해를 심화하고 또 다른 측면을 조명하는 시도로서 가사노동에 내재된 인지 노동을 규명하고, 가사노동의 정신적 부하를 구체적인 맥락에서 살펴보았다. 공적 역할을 공동으로 수행하는 맞벌이 부부가 늘어나는 상황에서, 기술 발전이 가사노동의 부담을 줄여주고, 공평한 분담이 이루어질 것이라는 기대와 달리, 또다른 측면에서 가사노동의 편중이 나타나고 정신적 부담이 가중되었다. 본 연구는 기존의 가사노동이 아니라 가사노동의 복잡성과 그 내재된 인지적 노동을 포착함으로써 가사노동의 새로운 사회적 이해를 촉구하며, 이러한 새로운 방식의 접근은 가사노동을 수행하는 사람들의 정신적 부하를 보다 깊이 이해하고, 이를 해결할 방안을 모색하는 데 중요한 기초가 될 것이다.

영문 초록

Research on housework has traditionally focused on measurement and physical performance, emphasizing the quantification of tasks and processes. However, this approach has resulted in a partial and fragmented understanding of domestic labor. To develop a more comprehensive understanding, it is crucial to examine previously overlooked dimensions, particularly the mental load associated with household management. This study employs the concept of cognitive labor to analyze the mental load experienced by individuals engaged in household labor. The research focuses on seven dual-income couples with children under 13 years old, utilizing in-depth interviews to explore their experiences within the specific context of managing both housework and childcare responsibilities. By identifying and examining the cognitive labor inherent in household labor, this research aims to deepen our understanding of domestic responsibilities and illuminate their hidden psychological dimensions. Despite technological advances and the increasing prevalence of dual-income households, the anticipated reduction and equitable distribution of housework has not materialized. Instead, we observe an intensification of mental stress and a concentration of household management burden. This study advocates for a new social understanding of household labor that acknowledges its complexity and the significant cognitive labor it entails. This fresh perspective will provide an essential foundation for better comprehending the mental load faced by those responsible for household management and developing effective solutions to address these challenges.
