『불교』에 나타난 조종현의 학술과 개혁론 - 『대승기신론』강의와 강원교육제도를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 불교잡지 『불교』에 게재된 조종현의 저술을 통해 그의 교학과 강원교육 개혁안을 고찰한다. 특히 「大乘起信論講義」와 「講院敎育과 制度改新」을 중점적으로 분석하여 그의 사상과 개혁론의 특징을 밝히고자 하였다. 「강의」는 1932년부터 1933년까지 『불교』에 총 7회에 걸쳐 연재되었다. 「강의」는 원문, 국문번역, 설명, 용어풀이의 네 부분으로 구성되어 있으며, 특히 현상적 특징보다는 심리적 측면과 식(識)을 강조하는 해석이 돋보인다. 이는 당시 『기신론』에 대한 시대적 이해와 함께 유식학을 전공한 조종현의 학문적 배경이 반영된 것으로 보인다. 또한 『대정장』과의 비교 분석을 통해 조종현이 사용한 『기신론』 텍스트의 특징을 살펴보고, 원효와 법장의 주석서 영향 관계도 검토하였다. 「講院敎育과 制度改新」에서는 전통 강원교육의 일곱 가지 문제점을 지적하고, 교과과정과 교수방법의 개혁안을 제시하였다. 기존의 사미과, 사집과, 사교과, 대교과 체계를 초등과, 중등과, 고등과의 3단계로 재편성할 것을 주장하였으며, 불교사 과목을 신설하고 근대식 교육방식을 도입할 것을 제안하였다. 특히 과목별 전담 강사제, 균형 있는 시간 배분, 시험제도 도입 등 실질적인 개선방안을 구체적으로 제시하였다. 본 연구는 20세기 초 한국불교의 교육개혁 논의에서 교육개혁가로서의 면모를 조명했다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This study examines Cho Chong hyŏn’s Buddhist scholarship and his proposals for reforming the Sangha education system, as presented in the Buddhist journal Pulgyo. Particular attention is given to his “Lectures on the Awakening of Faith in Mahāyāna” (Daesunggisinrongangeui) and “Education and Institutional Reform in Monk’s Academy” (Ganwon-gyoyukgwa jedogaesin). The “Lectures on the Awakening of Faith in Mahāyāna” were published in seven installments in Pulgyo between 1932 and 1933. Analyzing these lectures reveals Cho Chong hyŏn’s understanding of the text and his unique teaching approach. Each lecture typically consisted of four parts: the original text, a Korean translation, an explanation, and a set of terminology notes. Notably, he focused on psychological and cognitive elements over observable phenomena, reflecting both the period’s interpretative tendencies and his own Yogācāra background. In “Education and Institutional Reform in Monk’s Academy,” Cho Chong hyŏn criticized seven aspects of the traditional Buddhist education system, suggesting changes in both curriculum and instructional methods. He proposed updating the traditional four-level curriculum to a three-tier system-elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels- while incorporating Buddhist history and introducing modern methods such as regular testing and specialized instructors in various subjects.
