국문 초록

본 연구는 1990년대 이정애의 『루이스 씨에게 봄이 오는가』와 『소델리니 교수의 사고수첩』을 통해 한국 남성동성애물이 BL 장르로 전환되는 과정에서 이정애 텍스트의 역할을 고찰한다. 1990년대는 일본의 남성동성애물이 국내에 유입되며 대중 하위문화와 결합한 과도기적 시기였다. 이후 BL 장르는 다양한 사회문화적 모티프가 결합하며 주류화되었다. 본 연구는 이정애의 텍스트가 장르적 경계를 확장하는 메타서사로 작동했음을 논의하며, ① 이중자아, ② 문명과 자연, ③ 질병 모티프를 분석한다. 이들 모티프는 규범적 이성애와 반규범적 동성애의 경계를 무화하며 사랑의 가능성을 확장하는 장치로 기능한다. 1990년대 한국 남성동성애물은 BL 장르로 완전히 전환되지는 않았으나, 이정애의 텍스트는 당시 검열이라는 사회문화적 맥락을 폭로하고자 전략적으로 관습적 클리셰의 작위성을 드러내는 메타서사적 장치를 내세워 BL 장르화에 중요한 시사점을 제공했다는 의의를 갖는다. 이를 통해 당대 사회 여성 소비 주체들이 욕망하는 사회문화적 모티프를 재맥락화하는 방식으로 형성된 오늘날 BL 장르 컨벤션의 기능과 작동 원리를 이해할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study examines the role of Lee Jung-ae’s Is Spring Coming to Mr. Lewis? and Professor Soderlini’s Notebook of Accidents(1990s) in the transition of Korean male same-sex narratives into the BL (Boys’ Love) genre. The 1990s in Korea marked a transitional period in which Japanese male homoerotic narratives were introduced and hybridized with local subcultural discourse. Over time, the BL genre has become mainstream, incorporating a range of sociocultural motifs such as feminism, queer discourse, and idol culture. Focusing on Lee’s texts as meta-narratives that challenge genre boundaries, this study analyzes three recurring motifs—(1) double identity, (2) civilization vs. nature, and (3) disease—as narrative devices that dismantle the binary between normative heterosexuality and non-normative homosexuality. Although Korean male same-sex narratives of the 1990s had not fully transitioned into the BL genre, Lee Jung-ae’s works offer significant insight into the genre formation process. By strategically exposing the artificiality of genre cliches within the sociocultural constraints of censorship, her meta-narrative techniques reveal a subversive approach that foregrounds the potentiality of love beyond established norms. This allows for a better understanding of the functions and operative mechanisms of contemporary BL genre conventions, which were formed through the recontextualization of sociocultural motifs desired by female consumer-subjects of the time.
