국문 초록

이 글에서는 한국 동물권 운동에서 인간 동물과 비인간 동물의 젠더/섹슈얼리티가 어떻게 다루어지고 구축되고 있는지, 이 과정에서 시스-이성애규범성은 어떻게 강화하거나 약화되는지를 검토했다. 동물권 운동에서 젠더/섹슈얼리티 논의가 부족하다는 문제의식에서 출발해, 비판적 에코페미니즘의 이론적 기여를 참조하며 여성/퀴어 동물권 활동가를 심층면접해 이들의 경험을 (1) 내부 조직 구조와 (2) 캠페인 활동, 그리고 (3) 탈규범화를 가로막는 요소로 구분해 분석했다. 연구 결과, 단체 활동에서 종과 젠더/섹슈얼리티 문제 사이의 단절, 경직된 관료적 체계, 동물권 운동의 열악한 위치는 시스-이성애규범성을 재생산하는 반면, 활동가 개인들은 운동 과정에서 차별과 폭력을 민감하게 포착하고 이를 타파하기 위한 시도들을 모색하고 있었다. 분석을 통해 동물권 운동 내 시스-이성애규범성을 비판하고 해체하기 위한 운동 내 긍정적 잠재력들을 발휘하는 데 기여하고자 했다. 마지막으로, 한국 사회의 동물 해방을 달성하고 불평등을 넘어서기 위해서는 활동가들의 노력이 단체와 동물권 운동 차원으로 확대되고 관련 논의가 활성화될 필요가 있음을 제언했다.

영문 초록

This paper examines how the gender and sexuality of human and non-human animals are addressed within the Korean animal rights movement, and how this process either reinforces or conflicts with cis-heteronormativity. The study, based on critical ecofeminism, analyzes in-depth interviews with feminist and queer animal rights activists. The findings are categorized into three areas: (1) organizational structure, (2) field activities, and (3) obstacles to deconstructing normativity. The research reveals that a general disconnection to gender and sexuality issues, bureaucratic rigidity, and poor conditions within organizations reinforce cis-heteronormativity. However, individual activists are attuned to issues of discrimination, inequality, and violence, and actively seek ways to consider gender and sexuality beyond species boundaries. This study not only critiques cis-heteronormativity within the animal rights movement but also identifies existing positive potentials to challenge and deconstruct these norms. The paper concludes by suggesting that in order to achieve animal liberation in Korean society and overcome current inequalities within the movement, the efforts of individual activists must be expanded to organizational and movement-wide levels, with more active engagement in related discussions.
