‘義理禪’에 대한 이해를 통해 본 草衣 禪思想의 특징

국문 초록

조선 후기 禪理論諍은 白坡亙璇이 『禪文手鏡』을 통해 ‘조사선·여래선·의리선’이란 삼종선을 제시하자, 이에 대해 草衣意恂이 『禪門四辨漫語』를 통하여 조목조목 비판하면서 촉발되었다. 초의는 祖師가 전한 禪이 祖師禪이고 如來가 전한 禪이 如來禪이라 말하면서, 여래선의 성격이 바로 의리선이라 말하고 있다. 초의는 ‘여래선이 곧 의리선이다’라고 주장하면서, 백파가 구분한 조사선과 여래선, 格外禪과 義理禪의 분류를 해체시켜버린 것이다. 백파와 초의의 선리논쟁에 있어서 핵심적인 견해 차이는 ‘의리선’에 대한 이해의 차이에 기인한다고 할 수 있다. ‘義理’를 전달하는 수단이 언어임을 생각할 때 초의의 선사상은 언어와 교학에 대한 긍정이며, 언어관에 차이가 백파와 초의의 선사상을 갈라놓았다고 할 수 있다. 臨濟는 분명 “三句에서 알아차리면 제 자신도 구제하지 못한다.”라고 말했고, ‘불립문자·교외별전’을 표방하는 선사상에 입각해 보면 초의가 ‘의리선’을 통해 주장하고 있는 선사상은 華嚴家의 입장에 떨어져버렸다고 평가할 수도 있다. 문제는 초의가 ‘여래선·의리선’을 통해 드러나는 선사상은 어떠한 사상적 배경 속에서 출현한 것이며, 이러한 초의의 선사상이 지니는 함의와 의의가 무엇인가 하는 점이다. 본고에서는 초의의 이러한 선사상 속에는 추사와 다산 등 당시 고증학과 실학자들의 영향이 있으며, 임제종의 법맥과 임제 선풍을 추종하는 당시 불교계의 승려들에 대한 비판의식이 내재되어 있음을 밝혔다.

영문 초록

The Seon theory Arguments in the late Joseon Dynasty was sparked by the detailed criticism of Choeui euisun through the 『Seonmunsabyeonmaneo』 when Baekpa Geungseon presented three kinds of Seon of ‘Patriarch Seon, Tathagata Seon and Semantic Seon’ through 『Seonmunsugyeong』. Choeui says that the Seon passed down by Patriarch is Patriarch Seon and the Seon passed down by Tathagata is Tathagata Seon, and that the characteristic of Tathagata Seon is Semantic Seon. Choeui argued that ‘Tathagata Seon is Semantic Seon’, dismantling the classification of Patriarch Seon and Tathagata Seon, Beyond formality Seon and Semantic Seon, which were distinguished by Baekpa. It can be said that the key difference in the Seon theory Arguments between Baekpa and Choeui is due to the difference in understanding of ‘Semantic Seon’. Considering that the means of delivering ‘meaning’ is language, Choeui’s Seon thought is positive for language and Buddhist studies, and it can be said that the difference in language views divided the Seon thought of Baekpa and Choeui. Imje clearly said, “If you notice it in the third phrase, you can't save yourself.” Based on the Seon thought of advocating ‘Not depending on language for enlightenment and The special transmission outside teaching’ it can be evaluated that the Seon thought, which Choeui claims through ‘Semantic Seon’, has fallen into the position of the Huayan thought. The writer wants to clarify what kind of ideological background Choeui’s Seon thought through ‘Tathagata Seon and Semantic Seon’ appeared in and explain the implications and significance of his Seon thought. In this paper, it was revealed that in Choeui’s Seon thought, there was an influence of historical research and Silhak scholars at the time, such as Chusa and Dasan, and that there was a sense of criticism about Buddhist monks at the time who followed the lineage and the Seon style of Linji school.
