학회·대학연구소를 중심으로 본 한국 시민사회연구의 변화

국문 초록

이 논문은 시민사회연구(civil society study)에 대한 포괄적 접근을 통해 한국에서 시민사회연구가 어떻게 변해왔으며, 현재 어디에 있는지를 진단하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 먼저, 시민사회연구의 정의, 쟁점, 주요 기관 등을 포함하여 학문적 토대를 구축하고자 시도한 해외 논의를 검토하였다. 국내 조사는 한정된 키워드를 통해 학회지에 게재된 학술논문을 분석한 선행연구들의 방법론적 한계를 보완하고자 검색 키워드를 34개로 확대하고, 학회와 대학연구소를 분석 대상으로 삼았다. 조사 결과로 논문은 한국학술지인용색인(KCI) 데이터베이스를 통해 확보한 시민사회연구 관련 학회와 대학연구소의 77개 목록을 제공하였다. 아울러, 설립 시기, 학문 분야, 키워드 변화, 학술지 발행 등 국내 시민사회 관련 학술연구기관의 특징을 분석하고, 외부 제도·정치·사회환경과 연동하여 기관명에 포함된 키워드 변화를 탐색적으로 논의하였다. 연구 결론으로 첫째, 2010년대 이후 국내 시민사회연구가 침체하고 있다기보다는, 여러 갈래로 분화 발전하고 있다고 평가하였다. 둘째, 연구 주제의 분화, 발전이 학문공동체의 내적 성숙보다는 외부 제도에 더 영향받았을 개연성을 제시하며 후속 연구를 제안하였다. 셋째, 국가 권력과 시장 자본으로부터 거리를 확보하고 실천학문으로서 시민사회연구의 학문적 정체성을 정립하기 위한 학계의 성찰과 논의의 필요성을 강조하였다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to diagnose how ‘civil society studies’ in Korea has evolved and where it stands currently through a comprehensive approach to civil society study. To achieve this, it reviews international discussions attempting to establish scholarly foundations, including definitions, issues, key institutions, and more. Domestic investigations address the methodological limitations of previous studies analyzing only academic papers published in journals through limited keywords. To overcome these limitations, the search keywords were expanded to 34, focusing on academic societies and university research institutes. The survey results provide a list of 77 academic societies and university research institutes obtained through the Korean Citation Index (KCI) database. Additionally, it analyzes characteristics such as establishment period, academic fields, keyword variations, and journal publications. It also explores changes in keywords within institutional names by examining their connections with external institutional, political, and social environments. In conclusion, it interprets that civil society studies in Korea has not stagnated but rather diversified since the 2010s. It also suggests that the diversification and development of research topics have been influenced more by external institutions than by the internal maturity of the academic community. Lastly, it emphasizes the need for follow-up research and discussions to establish the academic identity of civil society researchers and academic institutions, securing distance from state power and market capital, and establishing scholarly identity as applied scholarship.
