국문 초록

이 글에서는 연씨형제집권기인 665년부터 668년 고구려 멸망까지를 중심으로 연남생의 대당투항과 연남건‧연남산의 대당항전에 초점을 맞추어 사실관계를 확인하고 연구자들간 쟁점이 된 문제들을 재검토해보았다. 그 결과 연개소문의 사망년은 665년이며 고구려 내분의 발생시기는 666년 초임을 확인하였다. 또한 당은 두 차례에 걸친 연남생의 대당청병에 대한 확인을 위해 최헌을 파견하였다. 당은 연남생의 청병에 대한 조건으로 연헌성의 대당입조와 고구려성의 투항을 요구하였다. 연남생의 대당투항 이후, 고구려의 대당항전은 연남건을 중심으로 전개되었다. 연남건의 대당항전과 관련해 신성‧부여성‧사수전투가 주목을 끈다. 연남건은 신성을 빼앗김으로써 고구려 서변의 요충지를 당에 내주었다. 이에 고구려군은 대당방어전략을 마련하며 압록진을 중심으로 당군과 대치하였다. 그러자 당군은 부여성으로 진격하여 함락시킴으로써 배후의 안전을 확보한 상태에서 장기적으로 대고구려전쟁을 수행할 수 있는 여건을 확보하였다. 또한 연남건은 평양성 인근 대동강의 지류인 사수에서 당연합군과 결전을 벌였으나 패하고 말았다. 이후 연남건과 보장왕, 연남산은 대당항전 여부를 두고 분열함으로써 고구려 멸망을 더욱 재촉하였다.

영문 초록

This paper makes clear the facts with regard to the struggle for power between Yeon Gaesomun's sons and reexamines the issue from 665 to 668, the period of the reign of the Yeon Namsaeng(淵男生) brothers. As a result, I confirmed the death date of Yeon Gaesomun as 665 and that the struggle for power between the brothers occurred in early 666. Besides Tang(唐) sent Choi Hyun(崔獻) to Yeon Namsaeng for the purpose of affirmation with regard to the request for the dispatch of troops. I found out the fact that Tang demanded attendance at the Royal Court of Yeon Namsaeng's son and the surrender of a Koguryo fortress to the Tang. Yeon Namsaeng's surrender to the Tang accelerated the fall of the Koguryo regime. After this, the war of Koguryo toward Tang progressed with Yeon Namgeon(淵男建) as the central figure. The three battles of Sinseong(新城), Buyeoseong(夫餘城) and Sasu(蛇水) are important with regard to the Koguryo-Tang war. Koguryo relinquished a strategic point of the west when Sinseong fell to the Tang. Koguryo thereupon established a new defense strategy and confronted the Tang with Abrokjin(鴨綠津) as the center. Subsequently Tang secured the safety of it's rear front by taking Buyeoseong which was an important castle of the north side of Koguryo. Koguryo's armies were defeated by the Tang union forces on the Sasu river which is a tributary to the Daedong river(大同江). Moreover Yeon Namgeon, King Bojang(寶藏王), and Yeon Namsan(淵男産) were divided by internal conflicts. Koguryo was on the road to collapse.
