The social structure of colonial Chosun consisted of Japanese ruling class and Korean subordinates. As Japan occupied Chosun by force in 1910 when film industry of Chosun just had begun to be established, the industry was readily taken control by Japanese. This article deals with this Japanese dominated film industry, studying who ran it and how it was formed. Focusing on the history of movie theaters in Kyongsung, I tried to identify a discriminative dual structure of Japanese and Korean. It may be summarized as follows. First Sino-Japanese War and Russo-Japanese War were considered crucial to the colonialization of Chosun. During the wars, large numbers of Japanese merchants, as well as Japanese soldiers, moved into Chosun peninsular. As Japanese immigrants increased, theaters began to be founded around Japanese foreign settlement as center. And the permission of building a new movie theater were only given to Japanese civilians as a privilege. As a result, in 1917 when Japanese Tamura bought Dansungsa, all the theaters in Kyongsung fell into hands of Japanese. In 1910 the very first regular movie theater Kyongsung Godeng Yoenye Gwan was founded and it operated changes. While the prior screening was done by touring of a movie screening team to theaters, the new regular movie theater made it possible to play various movies on daily basis. This led theaters to hire projectionists, movie talkers and musical bands. The most influential one of them was a movie talker. In this article, I studied on Japanese talkers who had never been mentioned in any other research. In 1913, the number of Japanese and Korean movie talkers and the treatment of them had great differences. And the film industry was reorganized as Japanese dominated one. Comparing the numbers of movie theaters and participants of movie talker qualifying examination shows it well. The film industry of Chosun could not escape from the influence of Japanese civilians even without a direct control of government such as censorship. As a consequence, Chosun had not had a chance to develop any kind of abilities involving movie making until 1920s when puny attempts of producing their own films was made.
