영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the living experience and family interactions of the elderly living in traditional residential culture of Jeju island based on grounded theory research method. Also, this study aims to derive implications for various problems of the elderly such as isolation and caregiving for the elderly, which are problematic due to the nuclear family and weakening of family care functions in modern society. As a result of in-depth interviews and analysis with 8 cases, the core category was found to be “living on their own”. The elderly who participated in the interview consistently emphasized “independence” and they had pioneered their own lives from their youth to their old age. The elderly answered that they want their children to live independent lives separated from their parents. Thus, they have chosen a traditional form of residence to support their children’s independence. However, exchanges between generations are still remain, which has become a driving force in resolving the feeling of isolation and expressing their self-esteem. Through these results, we could see the possibility that the perception of the elderly could be transformed into a “productive subject” rather than a “object of care”. Finally furtherance of social cultural atmosphere and policy alternatives to encourage and maintain elderly’s independence were suggested.
