국문 초록

니체의 ‘덕’(고상하거나 바람직한 기질 내지 성향)에 관한 이론은 그의 윤리학적 사유체계의 중심을 이룬다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 우선 니체는, 아리스토텔레스가 그랬듯이, 매우 다채로우며 복잡한 구조를 지니는 기질이나 성향들에 ‘고상(귀)함’ 내지는 ‘탁월함’의 윤리적 의미를 부여하며, 그것들을 훌륭한 인간 혹은 ‘더 높은 자’의 본질적 구성요소로서 제시한다. 더 나아가, 니체는 이러한 ‘성격적 탁월성(고상한 기질/성향)’들 모두를, ‘획득하거나 유지/고양 시켜야 하는것’으로서 이해되는 ‘바람직한 것’으로 간주한다. 필자는 위에서처럼 간략히 스케치할 수 있는 니체의 ‘덕’ 이론을, 연작 논문에걸쳐 포괄적이고도 상세하게 조명하고자 하였고, 최근 그 조명 작업의 일부로서주요 니체적인 덕목들 중 하나인 “정직(Redlichkeit)”에 관한 논문을 집필하였다. 본 논문은, 또 하나의 중심적인 니체적인 탁월성인 “고독(Einsamkeit)”이라는 특성을 집중적으로 살펴보는 것을 목표로 한다. 본고에서 필자는, 니체의 덕 이론 안에서 하나의 성격적 탁월성으로 자리 잡고 있는 고독의 본질을, 혼자 있음, 혼자 있기를 바라는 것, 그리고 타인들, 더 정확하게는 이른바 “무리-유형”의 사람들과의 교제를 꺼리는 것에서 찾고 있다. 아울러, 니체에 따르면, 그러한 행동, 욕구로 구성되는 경향성으로서의 고독은 (우리들의 궁극적 목표인) 우리 자신의 창조적인 삶에 크게 기여하고, 바로 이런 이유에서 우리는 ‘고독해야 한다.’ 좀 더 구체적으로, 그것은 적극적인 창조적 활동과 (그러한 활동들의 가능조건이 되는 고귀한 능력들의 향상으로 이해되는) ‘성장’에 필수적이기에, 고독은 우리에게 바람직하다.

영문 초록

It can be said that Nietzsche’s theory of ‘virtues’(noble or desirable personality traits) constitutes the core of Nietzsche’s substantive ethics. As Aristotle does, Nietzsche confers the ethical meaning of nobleness or excellence on diverse, highly complicated traits, and presented them as essential characteristics of the ‘higher man’. Moreover, Nietzsche considers these ‘excellences of character’ as ‘desirable’ for us (in the normative sense of the term). The author planned to illuminate Nietzsche’s theory of virtues, which was roughly outlined above, in a comprehensive and detailed manner, and recently wrote an article on one of the Nietzschean major virtues, namely, “honesty(Redlichkeit)”, as a part of the project. Now, this writing aims at exploring another main excellence of character: “solitude(Einsamkeit)”. According to Nietzsche, solitude, which occupies the central place in Nietzsche’s theory of virtues, does consist in being alone, the desire to be by oneself, and the reluctance to socialise with the herd. Furthermore, in his view, solitude as a tendency composed of the aforementioned behavior and desire, greatly contributes to one’s own creative way of life, which is one’s ultimate end, and it is for this reason that one ought to be solitary. Specifically, solitude is desirable for us, since it renders possible intense creative activities and the pursuit of ‘growth’ in the sense of the acquisition or enhancement of noble capacities conducive to, or constitutive of, the creative life.
