국문 초록

이 연구는 송욱의 초기 시론에 나타난 비평 정신의 전개 양상과 그 근대적 의의를조망해 보는 것에 목적을 두고 있다. 그는 『시학평전』 등 여러 평론집을 통해 과거의전통 부재와 미래의 전망 상실 속에서 한국의 근대문학이 나아가야 할 길을 창작과비평의 양 분야에서 진지하게 탐색했다. 한국 문학의 위상을 한 단계 격상시키기 위해 철저한 자기반성의 자세를 바탕으로 문학에 있어서 ‘역사의식’과 ‘주체의식’이란무엇인지 심도 있게 모색한 그는 전통문화와 외래사조를 비교함으로써 한국 문학의새로운 이론적인 토대와 사상적인 기반을 마련하려고 노력했다. 그는 외래문화의 일방적인 수용만으로는 진정한 근대화를 이룰 수 없다는 사실을자각했기 때문에 이에 대한 대안으로 보편성과 특수성이라고 하는 서로 상반되는 특성을 고루 갖춘 근대화를 선취하기 위해 다각적인 전략을 모색했고 이를 바탕으로 근대화의 핵심 의제인 ‘주체성’의 문제를 문학을 통해 성취하고자 했다. 하지만 그는 보편적인 것, 이상적인 것, 이데아적인 것, 초월적인 것에 더 많은 가치를 부여했던 비평가였다. 그 때문에 서문에서는 ‘주체화의 의지’를 강하게 피력했지만 실제 본문의 비평적 적용에서는 ‘보편화의 욕망’에 더 많이 사로잡혀 있었다. 주체성의 의지보다는 보편정신에 대한 갈망이 과도하게 작용하여 우리의 특수한현실을 소거한 채 외래 사상에 대한 지나친 동경의 자세가 나타난 것도 사실이지만여전히 외래 사조의 영향 아래 자유로울 수 없는 지금의 실정에 비추어 보았을 때에도 그의 비평 정신은 충분히 가치가 있는 사례라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims to examine the change and continuity in the critical spirit and its modern meaning in Song Wook’s poetics. Through several review books, Song Wook has seriously explored the path of modern Korean literature in both fields of creation and criticism. To elevate the status of Korean literature, he explored what historical consciousness and subject consciousness are in literature in depth through thorough self-reflection. He tried to prepare a new theoretical foundation and ideological basis for Korean literature by comparing traditional culture with foreign trends. Song Wook’s critical spirit first began in the manner of disillusionment with the East and longing for the West. He then went through the process of seeking harmony and integration between the East and the West. Finally, he changed and moved toward the transcendence of the West and the rediscovery of the East. His critical spirit itself takes the form of a dialectical development. However, he realized that true modernization could not be achieved through the unilateral acceptance of foreign cultures. As an alternative, he tried to preempt modernization with the opposite characteristics of universality and specificity. He wanted to achieve, through literature, the problem of subjectivity, which is the core agenda of modernization.
