연호 이주환의 생애와 『李柱煥傳』

국문 초록

連湖 李柱煥(1854~1919)은 조선말에 태어나 나라가 망하는 격변의 시기를 겪었으며 고종의 승하 소식을 듣고 자결을 선택한 조선의 義士이다. 이주환은 대한제국이 망하자 일본제국주의에 복종하지 않고 세금을 납부하지 않았으며 고종이 승하했다는 소식을 듣고 자결하여 왜의 신민이 아닌 영원한 대한의 백성으로 남았다. 본고는 이주환의 생애를 재구하고 『李柱煥傳』을 분석하여 傳에서 이주환을 어떻게 형상화하였는지, 그리고 그 의미는 무엇인지에 대하여 살펴보았다. 생애에서는 이주환이 본래부터 강직한 성격의 소유자였는데 심석재 송병순을 스승으로 섬기며 의리에 대하여 공부하였고 스승의 순의에 감동하였음과 나라가 망하였는데 새로운 세금을 거두어들이자 이에 저항한 사실과 같은 해에 태어난 고종황제에 대하여 각별하게 생각하였는데 그 황제가 승하하자 자결하는 것으로 그를 모시고자 한 것이 그의 의리관에서 나온 것임을 확인하였다. 『경술기사』와 『순의기사』를 참고하여 『이주환전』을 분석하여 이주환이 세금을 바치지 않은 일, 고종황제가 승하하자 자결한 일에 대한 일화를 통해 이주환의 일생을 국가에 대한 ‘충’, 군왕에 대한 ‘의’, 죽음 앞에서의 ‘열’을 실천한 인물임을 확인할 수 있었다. 이민족에 의한 국가의 멸망이라는 미증유의 사태에서도 의연히 자신의 길을 걸었던 이주환의 삶은 나라가 있어야 국민도 개인도 행복할 수 있다는 점을 다시 한 번 깨닫게 해 준다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Yeonho Lee Ju hwan (1854~1919) was born at the end of Joseon and underwent a catastrophic period when the country was ruined, and he is a Joseon s martyr who chose to commit a suicide when he was told of Gojong s demise. Lee Ju hwan did not submit to the Japanese Imperialism and did not pay taxes when the Korea Empire collapsed. When he heard of Gojong’s demise, he committed a suicide and remained an eternal Empire subject, not a citizen of Imperial Japanese. In this paper, we reconstructed the life of Lee Ju hwan and analyzed the Lee Ju hwan story to see how Lee Ju hwan was expressed in the story and what it means. In life, Lee Ju hwan was originally a person with an upright character, and he studied the righteousness under Shim Seok jae and Song Byeong sun, serving them as teachers. He was impressed by the pure will of the teachers, and the fact that the country was ruined and resisted the new taxes when new taxes were allotted, and that he thought it very particular about Emperor Gojong who was born in the same year. It is confirmed that the fact that he served the emperor by committing a suicide when there was the emperor’s demise was from his view of righteousness. “Lee Ju hwan Story” was analyzed with reference to Gyeongsul Gisa and Sunui Gisa , and through the anecdotes that Lee Ju hwan did not pay taxes and that he committed a suicide on Emperor Gojong’s demise, it is confirmed that he was the person who practiced lifetime loyalty to the nation, the patriot confronted with the death of king, and the righteousness to the king. The life of Lee Ju hwan, who walked his own way in the unprecedented situation of the destruction of the nation by a different people, reminds us once again of the fact that both a nation and an individual can be happy only if there is a nation.
