영문 초록

This essay examines the inter-relationship between translator’s gender identity and gender translation in Alice Walker’s The Color Purple through a Butlerian perspective. Some current gender translation studies from a radical feminist perspective have focused on the issues of women’s liberation against male-centered society. These studies have little consideration for the space of cohabitation between male and female discourse strategies. If we use Butler’s insights on gender identity and performance theory, however, the direction of gender translation studies will be able to shift. To testify this, this essay delineates how contemporary gender studies, i.e. Butler’s theory, invite us to reconsider gender translation skills or strategies. This essay suggests three major translation strategies: (1) Do not consider translator’s gender identity first in gender translation; (2) Consider the dimensions of performativity in gender translation texts; and (3) Consider the purpose of cohabitation issues as a locus of cross-cultural writings in gender translation.
