“동해” 명칭의 중국어 표기 방안 고찰

국문 초록

본고는 “동해” 홍보자료와 동영상에 쓰일 “동해” 명칭의 적절한 중국어 표기법 및 발음을 찾기 위한 연구이다. 이를 위해 우선 현재 중국의 지도의 동해 표기에 대해 알아보고 다음엔 중국의 역사문헌과 지도에는 동해가 어떻게 기록되어있는지 살펴 동해의 중국어 자막 표기의 적절한 답안을 찾고자 했다. 현재 중국에서 출판된 거의 모든 지도책은 “동해”를 “일본해”로 표기하고 있다. 일상생활에서도 역시 “일본해”가 쓰이고 있으며 이것에 대해 문제점을 느끼거나 이 문제에 진지하게 관심을 가지고 있는 중국인들은 소수의 관련 학자들 외에는 거의 없다. 하지만 중국에서 “일본해”가 동해 해역의 공식 명칭으로 사용된 것은 100여년 남짓 된 일이며 그 전에는 “낙랑해”, “해”, “대해”, “경해”, “경천해” 등의 다양한 이름으로 불렀다는 것이 문헌에 전해지고 있다. “동해”는 위의 다른 이름들과 마찬가지로 중국의 다양한 문헌에 전해지는 명칭인데 주로 지금의 중국 동북부, 한반도의 서북지역에서 활동하며 동쪽으로 바다에 접하는 활동 영역을 갖고 있던 여진, 거란, 만주족들이 해당 해역을 부르던 이름이었다. 위에서 언급한 다른 이름들이 짧은 시간 혹은 고유명사가 아니라 일반명사의 성격에 가까운 이름이었던 것에 반해 “동해”는 요, 금 시대를 거쳐 청 후기까지 사용되었던 명칭이었으며 오늘날의 동해 해역과 거의 일치하는 지역을 가리키는 고유명사의 성격이 강한 명칭이다. 따라서 “동해”는 그 동안 중국에서 사용되었던 다른 어떤 명칭과 비교해도 오늘날 동해를 지칭하는 중국어 명칭으로 사용하기에 가장 적절한 것으로 판단된다. 또한 중국 지도에서 외국 지명을 표기하는 방법을 고찰해 본 결과 육지 지명의 경우 지명이 원래의 한자를 갖고 있을 경우 그것을 그대로 표기하되 영문 표기는 해당 국가의 발음대로 적는 것을 원칙으로 한다는 사실을 알았다. 하지만 국가와 국가 사이의 공해 명칭의 경우 한자는 원래의 것을 적되 영문의 경우 어느 한 국가의 발음을 표기하지 않고 국제적으로 통용되는 지명을 사용한 것을 발견했다. 이것은 “东海(East Sea)”를 동영상의 자막으로 사용하는 것이 적절하다는 주장을 뒷받침 해 줄 수 있는 내용이다. 또한 본 보고서를 통해 진행한 중국의 “동해” 사용 역사에 대한 조사는 해당 해역에 다른 어떤 지명보다도 “동해”가 어울린다는 것을 더 잘 설명해주고 있기도 하다.

영문 초록

This research aimed at searching a proper Chinese writing method and pronunciation for the East Sea for subtitles and dubbing work of PR materials and video of “East Sea” to be distributed to foreign countries over the world. For this, this research investigated the writing of the East Sea in current Chinese map, and intended to search a proper solution for Chinese subtitles of the East Sea by researching how the East Sea were recorded in Chinese historical books and maps. Currently, almost every map books published in China are writing “East Sea(東海)” as “Sea of Japan(日本海)”. In ordinary days, also, “Sea of Japan(日本海)” is usually utilized, and there’s almost no Chinese people who has a specially critical mind on this, besides only a few relevant scholars. However, according to a literature, the official name of the East Sea has been used as “Japanese Sea(日本海)” since 100 years, previously, it was called in various names, such as “Nakranghae(樂浪海)”, “Hae(海)”, “Daehae(大海)”, “Gyeonghae(鯨海)”, “Gyeongcheonhae (鯨天海)”, etc. While the above mentioned names were utilized during only a short period or similar to common noun instead of proper noun, “Donghae” had been utilized until late Qing, through Liao and Jin Dynasty, which is most likely name with strong characteristic of proper noun that indicates a region almost coincides with current East Sea. Therefore, Donghae seems most proper Chinese term of current Donghae(East Sea), compared to other terms that had been used in China. As the result of investigating the writing method of foreign place name in Chinese map, this research determined that Chinese map writes the original Chinese characters of the name in case of land, however English name is written according to the pronunciation of the relevant country. However, in case of the name of international waters between countries, original Chinese characters are written as they are, however English name is written according to the international name in popular use instead of writing the pronunciation of a specific country. This is the content that supports the insistence that writing “Donghae(East Sea)” as “East Sea(东海)” is proper for Chinese PR material.
