국문 초록

파리장서운동은 의병활동과 더불어 유림의 대표적인 항일독립운동의 사례이다. 파리장서운동에 대한 기존의 연구에서는 곽종석을 비롯한 경남유림의 역할이 다소 축소되어 언급되어 왔다. 이것이 본 연구에서 경남유림을 중심으로 파리장서 서명 자를 재검토하게 된 주된 이유이다. 본 연구에서 밝힌 파리장서에 서명한 경남유림은 대표서명자인 곽종석을 포함하여총 42명이다. 이는 기존 연구에 비해 3명이 늘어난 수치이다. 파리장서운동에 대한 기존의 연구에서는 김창숙이 곽종석에게 김황을 보내어 파리장서운동에 앞장서 줄것을 요청했다는 것이 통설이었다. 그런데, 이에 앞서 곽종석의 문인인 윤충하가 곽종석에게 파리강화회의에 청원할 것을 제안하였으며 곽종석이 곽윤과 김황을 서울에 보내 김창숙을 만나게 했다는 주장이 제기되었다. 이에 본 연구에서는 곽종석과 그의 제자로 파리장서운동의 산파역을 맡았던 곽윤과 김황 등을 중심으로 경남 유림의 동향을 살펴보았다. 전우는 파리장서운동에의 참여 거부 의사를 밝히면서, 그러한 뜻을 <疆土詩>에 담아 문생들에게 보여준 것으로 알려져 있다. 이 <疆土詩>는 전우와 그 제자의 문집이 아닌 성순영의 문집에 次韻詩의 原詩 형태로 실려 전해지고 있음이 확인되었다. 성순영은 전우의 시에 차운하는 방식으로 전우의 처세관을 공박하였고, 이종홍도 전우의 시에 차운하면서 전우의 처세관을 정면으로 비판하였다. 성순영과 이종 홍은 경남의 유림이다. 전우의 <강토시>와 이에 대한 경남유림의 차운시에 대해 서는 본 연구에서 처음으로 검토를 시도하는 것이다. 파리장서 서명자들과 전우의 <강토시>에 대한 차운시를 통해 조국이 위기에 처했을 때 치열한 의병활동으로 침략에 맞서 싸운 경남지역의 儒風을 재확인할 수 있었 다는 것이 본 연구의 주된 결과이자 의의이다.

영문 초록

The Paris Letter Movement was a typical case of anti-Japanese Independence Movement by confucian scholars along with other patriotic corps’ activities. Previous studies on the Paris Letter Movement has dealt with somewhat smaller roles of Gyeongnam confucian scholars including Kwak-Jongseok in the movement. So, this study tries to reconsider the signers of the Paris letter, focusing Gyeongnam confucian scholars. Gyeongnam confucian scholars who signed the Paris letter were forty-two in total, including Kwak Jongseok, the representative signer, while previous studies dealt with forty signers. Conventional studies showed that Kim Changsook had sent Kim Hwang to Kwak Jongseok, asking his leading the movement. However, a different idea was raised that Yun-Chungha, Kwak’s follwer, had suggested making a plea to Paris Peace Conference and that Kwak-Jongseok had sent Kwak-Yeon and Kim-Hwang to Kim-Changsook in Seoul. So, this study investigated the trend of Gyeongnam confucian scholars, focusing Kwak-Jongseok and his followers such as Kwak-Yeon, and Kim-Hwang, who played the midwife role of the Paris Letter Movement. Cheon-Woo was said to clarify his refusal to participate the movement showing the Gangtosi to his followers. His Gangtosi was handed down as the original poem of the corresponding-rhymed poem in the collection of works by Seong-Soonyoung, not in the collection of Cheon’s follower. Seong-Soonyoung refuted Cheon’s attitude toward the life and world by a poem with the rhymes of the Gangtosi, and Lee-Jonghong also criticized Cheon by a verse with the same rhymes. Seong-Soonyoung were confucian scholars in the Gyeongnam Province. The first review was made on Cheon’s Gangtosi and the corresponding-rhymed poems in this study. This study had a key meaning in reconsidering the signers of the Paris Letter and the correponding-rhymed poem as to Cheon’s Gangtosi and in reconfirming the trend of Gyeongnam confucian scholars who defied the Japanese invasion, leading fierce patriotic corps activities in the national crisis.
