국문 초록

본 연구의 목표는 3.1운동에 대한 선교사들의 시선들을 고찰하는 것이다. 많은 선교사들이 3.1운동에 직 ‧ 간접적으로 참여하면서 3.1운동 기간 동안에 한국에서 벌어진 일들을 소상히 다루고 있다. 또한 그들이할 수 있는 노력을 다해서 일본을 설득하기도 하고, 또 국제 사회에 당시의 상황을 알렸다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 노력들을 세 명의 선교사의 시선으로 바라보았다. 3.1운동에 직접 참여하면서 3.1운동의 실상을 알린 스코필드 선교사, 한국 역사에 대한 깊은 이해를 바탕으로 3.1운동을 바라본 게일 선교사 그리고 여성의 시각으로 3.1운동의 세세한 내용을 일기로 알린 노블 선교사가 바로 그들이다. 이들은 같은 사건을 각기 다른 시각으로 바라보면서 3.1운동에 대해서 이야기하고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 이야기들을 직접 들여다봄으로 당시 3.1운동을 대했던 선교사들의 태도와 기여들을 살펴보고 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the missionaries views on the Samil Movement. Many missionaries have been directly or indirectly involved in the Samil Movement, dealing with what has happened in Korea on 1919. They also tried to persuade Japan society and to inform the situation at that time to the international community. This study looks at these efforts with the eyes of three missionaries: Schofield, Gale and Noble. Scofield directly participated in the Samil Movement and informed the truth of the Samil Movement to the world; Gale, who had a deep knowledge of Korean history, tried to interpret its meaning; and Noble informed the details of the Samil Movement as a woman missionary. As they experienced the same historical event, they reported this event from different perspectives. Thus, this study examines the attitudes and contributions of missionaries who were involved in the Samil movement.
