영문 초록

Joban scholars have traditionally overlooked the significance of the second divine speech (Job 40-41) and regarded it as a later supplement. To the contrary, a rhetorical critical reading of the text shows us that the second speech of Yahweh about two great creatures, Behemoth and Leviathan, gives Job a crucial response to the question of innocent suffering. First of all, both Behemoth and Leviathan are depicted as positive in contrast to other biblical literature which usually shows negative overtones of them. This tendency of positive attitude toward creatures consistently appears in the first divine speech (Job 38-39) which demonstrates the mystery of animal kingdom. Second, Yahweh presents the two great beasts as the best creatures of all. Behemoth is portrayed as the first work of God's creation. Leviathan is pictured not only as the most powerful creature but also as the most beautiful one. Finally, Yahweh identifies the Behemoth and Leviathan with Job. By doing so, Yahweh reminds Job of his power and position in the created world. Yahweh,the Sage, teaches and challenges Job to transform his old identity to a new one. Job's legitimate question about innocent suffering has resulted in a renewed divine call.
