신자유주의 시대의 교차성 분석

국문 초록

킴벌리 크렌쇼가 제안한 교차성 개념이 최근 국내에서도 널리 회자되고 있다. 그러나 이 개념은 국내 학계에 정식으로 소개되었다고 하기 어려운 수준에서 유통되고 있으며, 따라서 그 동시대적 의의에 대한 검증 또한 진행되지 않은 상태다. 이런 문제의식에서 이글은 1)킴벌리 크렌쇼의 교차성 개념을 소개하고, 2)신자유주의 시대라는 현재의 상황 내에서 교차성 분석이 갖는 함의를 밝힌다. 교차성이란 차별들의 더하기로는 설명되지 않는, 특정 정체성들의 중첩점에서 발생하는 고유의 차별과 억압이 있음을 밝히는 개념으로, 구조의 어떤 역동이 특정 정체성들을 취약하게 만드는지 살필 것을 요구하는 개념이다. 이 개념이 제안된 1980년대 후반과 마찬가지로 우리는 지금 신자유주의 시대를 살아가고 있는데, 이것의 핵심은 정체성들의, 그리고 운동들의 분할을 통한 통치이다. 교차성 분석은 신자유주의에 의해 무관한 것으로 표상되는 여러 정체성들, 권력 축들이 실은 긴밀히 연결되어 있음을 드러내어 줄 수 있다는 점에서, 그리함으로써 계급운동과 정체성운동 등으로 갈라진 사회 운동들을 재통합할 수 있다는 점에서 신자유주의에 저항하는 운동에 필수적인 방법론이라고 할 수 있다. 또한 교차성 개념은 근본모순을 설정하고 다른 모순을 그것에 부차적인 것으로 설정하는 대신 중층적으로 결정되는 모순의 현재 모습을 들여다 볼 수 있게 해줌으로써 ‘지금 여기’에서의 투쟁을 가능하게 한다.

영문 초록

The intersectionality, term coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989, is becoming the talk of the scene these days. While many contemporary feminists, so called net-feminists or young-young feminists, identify themselves as intersectional feminist, this term is yet to be introduced academically to South Korea, however. And thus its contemporary significance is yet to be validated. Being aware of this problem, this article aims at 1)introducing Crenshaw’s term intersectionality and 2)clarifying implications of doing intersectional analysis in this era of neo-liberalism. The term is meant to indicate that there is more than just sum of discriminations, which uniquely take place at overlapping points of certain identities. The term demands us to see what dynamics of the system make certain identities vulnerable. This would in some sense update so called identity politics in which an integrated and non-exclusionary approach to each identity is possible. (But we should notice that this renewal of identity politics is not to lean on essentialized identities. Crenshaw emphasized to focus on the structure under which some identities are made prone to discrimination.) Like the time the term was suggested, it’s a neo-liberal age now and its key strategy is to divide and rule identities and movements as Lisa Duggan suggests. Doing intersectional analysis, we can disclose that many axis of powers which are presented as if unconnected by the neo-liberal system are actually deeply interconnected and thus we can reunite social progressive movement which are divided into Class politics, identity politics and so on. Finally, making us able to see the present state of contradictions, instead of setting one fundamental and setting others aside, intersectional analysis provides the foundations a total struggle of ‘now and here’ possible.
