국문 초록

본 논문은 제주도의 동쪽에 위치한 정의현성의 변천과정과 구조에 대하여 문헌기록과 고지도, 『탐라순력도』, 일제강점기 지적도, 최근 고고학조사 결과 등을 바탕으로 살펴보았다. 정의현이 설치되는 초기 단계에 축성된 古정의현성과 현재 정의현성을 구분하여 성곽의 입지조건을 토대로 성곽이 옮긴 사유를 밝혔다. 그 결과 읍성의 입지조건 중에 식수 확보가 가장 중요한 요소라는 것을 확인하였다. 성곽의 규모 및 구조와 관련하여, 古정의현성은 문헌기록이 부족하여 선행연구와 고고학조사 결과를 바탕으로 정리하였으며 현재의 정의현성은 일제 강점기 당시 작성된 지적도 및 고지도, 사료에 나타난 성곽 규모에 대한 기록을 토대로 연구하였다. 그리고 현재 정의현성의 축성방법은 평평하고 완만한 지형에 성벽을 협축하여 축성하였다. 그리고 『탐라순력도』를 바탕으로 성문, 치, 여장, 해자 등의 성벽 관련시설에 대해 그 원형을 검토하였다. 마지막으로 古정의현성은 1416년 이후에 축성되었고, 현재 정의현성은 1422년에 현재의 정의현성 위치로 이축되었다. 이러한 사실로 볼 때 古정의현성이 치소의 기능을 담당한 기간은 채 6년이 되지 않음을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the evolution and structure of the Jeongeuihyeon fortress located in the eastern part of Jeju Island based on the literature and ancient maps, the Tamna Sunryeokdo Map, landmark maps from the Japanese colonial period, and recent archaeological findings. First, the author divided the ancient Jeongeuihyeon fortress built in the early stage of the fortress construction and the current Jeongeuihyeon fortress before explaining why the fortress was moved based on the location of the fortress. It was confirmed as a result that securing drinking water was the most important factor in the location of the fortress. Regarding the size and structure of the fortress, the author relied on the results of previous researches and archaeological surveys since no sufficient record has been found on the ancient Jeongeuihyeon fortress, whereas the author relied on the landmark maps prepared during the Japanese colonial period as well as ancient maps and other historical records on the fortress size to study the present Jeongeuihyeon fortress. It was confirmed as a result that the Jeongeuihyeon fortress was built up by laying narrow walls on a flat and gentle terrain. And the prototype of the fortress wall facilities such as the gate, the decorations, top railing and the moat were examined based on the “Tamna Sunryeokdo Map”. Finally, the ancient Jeongeuihyeon fortress was built after 1416, and the present Jeongeuihyeon fortress was moved to its present location in 1422. These facts confirm that the ancient Jeongeuihyeon fortress did not oversaw the area for more than six years.
