국문 초록

본 연구에서는 디지털 기술의 발달에 따라 등장한 ‘공연 실황중계‘ 모델에 대한 사례 분석을 통하여 공연산업의 전통적 비용질병 현상의 완화가능성을 논의해 보고자 하였다. 이를 위해, 비용질병론에서 다루어져 왔던 주요 측정변수들을 정리해 보고, 이를 분석관점으로 활용하여 영국 국립극단의 ’NT Live’에 대한 생산성 분석을 시도하였다. 연구결과로 현재까지의 실황중계 모델의 성과는 가상의 공연공간 확대를 통한 관객 수 극대화가 핵심인 것으로 분석되었고, 이는 비용질병의 완화 가능성이 제시된 결과로 평가될 수 있다. 다만, 향후 수익성 안정화와 신규채널, 부가수익 창출이라는 다음단계 전략을 만들어 나가야 하는 과제를 남겼다고 사료된다. 이러한 결과는 우리나라 공연예술단체에게 중요한 시사점을 제공한다. 공연 실황중계 모델을 다양하게 활용하려는 국내의 움직임이 아직까지 뚜렷한 성과를 내지 못하고 있는 현실에서 공연예술단체는 성급하고 광범위한 도입보다는 먼저 글로벌사례에 대한 심층적인 이해를 바탕으로 도입 수준과 방향을 수립하여야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study aims to investigate whether the ‘Live Simulcast’ forms of performing arts help relieve chronic symptoms of ‘cost disease’ in major arts organizations. In doing so, this study structures and incorporates a wide range of measuring parameters discussed in conventional ‘cost disease’ argument to conduct a productivity analysis on ‘NT live’ case of the Royal National Theater in London. The results show that the most dramatic achievement introduced by the new model is the extensive outreach of audience base beyond its location constraint, which strongly indicates positive productivity gains in terms of consumption quantity. However, recent financial situation of the ‘NT live’ segment shows instability questioning the quality of earnings and suggests further diversification into new synergistic channels that would entail auxiliary revenues. These findings recommend a critical message regarding the strategic choice of local arts organizations concerned. Arts organizations should seriously consider that despite the global dispersion of live contents, even the most renowned top players might be facing challenges both financially and strategically. In regard, the institutions concerned must identify clear strategic goals and performance indicators along with feasibility assurance for each ‘live’ endeavors prior to implementing on a comprehensive scale. Thus, arts organizations – especially the ones receiving public budget support - attempting to ‘go live’ should refrain from any blind imitation and take prudent steps based on their strategic context.
