Sociocultural Dimensions of Life Satisfaction among Older Korean American Immigrants: Findings from a Qualitative Approach

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 미국에 거주하는 노령층 한국인 이민자들의 생활만족에 미치는 요인을 발견하는 데 있다. 연구방법으로는 질적 연구방법을 사용하여 미국 캘리포니아주 로스앤젤레스 카운티에 거주하는 301명의 한국인 이민자들을 인터뷰하였다. 질적 데이터 분석을 위해 Braun과 Clarke이 2006년에 개발한 내용분석방법을 사용하였다. 이 질적 분석을 통해 생활만족을 구성하는 여덟가지 요인이 도출되었는데, 그 요인들은 (1) 가족과 가족관계, (2) 건강상태, (3) 재정상태, (4) 종교, (5) 취미와 사회경제적 활동, (6) 친구, (7) 생활에 대한 긍정적 태도, 그리고 (8) 독립적 생활과 대중이 지지하는 활동 가능성이다. 주요연구결과로는 가족, 특히 성인자녀와의 관계가 생활만족에 있어서 중요한 차원으로 발견되었다. 그래서 성인자녀와의 빈번한 상호활동을 촉진시킬 수 있는 지역사회에 기반을 둔 프로그램과 활동이 노년층 한국인 이민자들의 생활만족을 향상시킬 수 있도록 개발될 필요가 있다. 정기적으로 제공되는 노인아파트 혹은 노인을 대상으로 하는 지역사회센터에서의 교육프로그램도 노령층 한국인 이민자들을 위한 개입전략으로 활용될 수 있다. 본 연구의 결과는 한국민족의 문화적 특성에 맞는 타당하고 신뢰할 수 있는 생활만족 척도 개발을 위해 사용될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This study aims to identify salient dimensions of life satisfaction among older Korean American immigrants. A qualitative research method was adopted by conducting in-person interviews with 301 older Korean American immigrants residing in Los Angeles County in California. Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis was used to develop themes and indicators of life satisfaction. Eight major themes were emerged that consisted of life satisfaction: (1) Family and family relations, (2) health Status, (3) financial security, (4) religion, (5) hobbies and social and economic activities, (6) friends, (7) positive attitudes toward life, and (8) independent living and availability of public support/services. These findings indicate that family, particularly relationship with adult children, is the critical dimension of life satisfaction in this population. Community-based programs and activities that promote frequent interaction with adult children should be developed to enhance older Koreans’ satisfaction with life. Operating these educational programs in senior apartments or senior community centers as one of regular programs will serve as a sustainable intervention strategy for this population. The findings can be also used to develop a valid and reliable ethnic-specific scale of life satisfaction that is culturally competent and appropriate.
