In this study, we looked into achievement of Mr Hong Jai Cho, founder and former chairman of HYOSUNG Group and his philosophy and practice of corporate social responsibility.
Many scholars and people who are involved in business agree that to survive in today’s capitalist society, a company can not just devote itself on profit maximization. Rather, they believe that failing to fulfill corporate social responsibility can provoke criticism and place itself under social attacks of number of stakeholders, resulting in decrease in profits and eventually putting company’s very existence in danger.
From this point of view, Mr Hong Jai Cho, having grown up in a strict Confucian environment under valuable teachings of his ancestry, lived in diligence and frugality and was discreet in his behavior trusting in humanism’s respects for human dignity ever since he was in his very young age. He valued promises and faithfulness and had a firm belief on making profits and gains only in fair and just ways. He had uncommon sense of responsibility and self-sacrifice, believed in quality oriented products and lived out his faith.
He minimized in his business the dependency on foreign technology, in efforts to be self reliable. Considering poor economy of his country, he chose import substituting industry and with his global insight, initially targeted foreign companies as competitors. From early stage in his business he regarded heavy & chemical Industry very important and being especially interested in developing human resources, made significant contributions and donations to scholarships and to foundation of schools in his home town. He also undertook Dong Yang Technical College and promoted it to an excellent educational institution.
Mr. Cho is also a pioneer in Korean business who in its early stage introduced customer oriented approach in management.
After Mr. Cho has passed away, his eldest son, Mr. S. R. Cho, the CEO of the Group is leading the company. In addition to his father’s beliefs on corporate social responsibility, S. R. Cho has up-to-date international sense and skills and is playing a major role as a civil diplomat contributing not only to HYOSUNG Group but also to globalization of Korean economy.
