This article examines the evolution of SPC since 1945, and analyze the historical process from the perspectives of Chandler s organizational capability model. Particular emphasis is placed on the investment issues of production, marketing, and its relation to the management system. In doing so, three main periods are divided. In start-up period, discussion focuses on the roll of Mr. Hur Changsung in Samlip during the 1940~1960s and reveals why, in spite of small economy of scale, Samlip could begin to start bakery business successfully. Three reasons are given for this; the invention of oven using briquet as the predominant technical advantage to other followers, the direct sales activity diffusing good brand image, and the management capability replenished by family. These characteristics in start-up period serve to underpin the second theme, namely the growth of Shany from the early 1970s to the early 1980s during the emergence of bakery mass market. In spite of the competition from other bakery business, Shany exhibited significant production and sales growth through the establishment of marketing division and R&D center launched by Mr. Hur Youngin. The third period is related to the rapid growth of new business, window bakery, premium ice cream, and doughnuts since the 1980s. This part examines why, despite of being disadvantageous position in terms of second mover to window bakery business and unfavorable brand image of Dunkin, Paris Croissant and BR Korea started to diversify and develop new business at the same time. The year 1986 is identified as a watershed year in that it was around then that customers in bakery market began to prefer freshness and SPC began to introduce franchise system to adapt itself to changing customer s needs.
