국문 초록

이 글은 기존의 네트워크 이론 연구를 메커니즘 차원, 즉 이론화 방식 차원에서 비판하고, 구조 사회학 입장에서 타당한 이론이 되기 위한 구성 요소를 살펴보고자 한다. 경영의 본질이 성과와 실패, 효율과 비효율과 같은 범주적 추론에 따라 생산 활동을 조율하는 것이라면, 그러한 범주적 판단 너머에 있는 교환 관계를 노정하는 것이 네트워크 이론의 본질이라고 본다. 첫째, 네트워크 이론의 오남용 사례로부터 네트워크 이론의 고유 구조를 확인한다. 즉, 네트워크 이론은 형식주의(形式主義)의 입장에서 약분 가능성이 낮은 구조, 불균질의 사회 구조를 표현한다. 자원의 제한된 접근 차원에서 사회적 관계를 이해하기 보다는, 타자의 행동을 제한적으로 관찰하는 차원에서 특정화 한다. 따라서, 사회적 관계는 그리고 그의 구조는 타자의 관찰가능성을 표현하는 하나의 형식(形式)이다. 둘째, 네트워크 이론의 미시적 기초와 관련된 문제점을 살펴본다. 사회적 관계의 본질을 형식주의로 이해하기 위해서는, 타자와 내가 맺고 있는 사회적 관계가 나의 선택에 왜 영향을 주는지 세밀하게 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 미시적 네트워크 현상과 관련한 네트워크 효과 일체를 모방, 규범, 외부성 등의 세 가지 유형으로 제시한다. 셋째, 거시적 네트워크 현상을 고려하지 않은 네트워크 이론은 잠정적이고 불완전하다. 거시 네트워크 현상의 분석은 우선 거시적 네트워크를 위상 구조 측면에서 특정하는 것에서 출발한다. 통상적으로 균질의 거시 네트워크 현상을 귀무가설(null hypothesis)로 하고, 현실의 네트워크 현상을 대립가설에 담아서 이론을 만든다. 넷째, 미시적 네트워크와 거시적 네트워크의 결합 이라는 측면에서 범주적 추론을 둘러싼 기존의 네트워크 연구를 재검토한다. 마지막으로 네트워크 이론의 향후 연구 방향에 대한 규범적 제안으로 결론을 대신한다.

영문 초록

This study seeks to examine theoretical requirements for network theory to be structurally sensible after reviewing confusions and mistakes commonly found in the extant approach to network science. Insofar as managerial decision is subject to categorical inference over organizational success, network science should help to uncover social relations that underlie categorical inference at the workplace. First, this study identifies the unique logical structure of arguments that pertain to network science. In particular, this study suggests that network science draws on a formalist view to social structure and serves to substantiate the non-commensurable and unequal structure of society. Network science seeks to identify a person’s social relations with respect to the observability of actions and opinions, not to the limited accessibility to resources and information. Second, theoretical issues associated with the micro-foundation of network science are reviewed. A formalist approach to the essence of social relations calls for disclosing each person’s vulnerability to the influence by others in relations, namely, the network effect. Three micro-processes that underlie the network effect of micro-level social networks are reviewed: imitation, normative conformity, and externality. Third, network science without reference to macro-level networks is theoretically tenuous. The analysis of macro-level networks presumes the identification of such networks with respect to network topology. Fourth, this study reviews key achievements in network science with respect to categorical inference, which draws on the interplay of micro and macro network processes. Lastly, normative suggestions for future research are discussed.
