영문 초록

“Jongmyo” is the Confucian shrine where the memorial tablets of the Joseon Dynasty s royal family are preserved. It is one of the cultural heritages in Korea designated as the World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO in December, 2005. In this study, Japanese translations of texts introducing Jongmyo in forms of printed materials, the internet, road signs are analysed to look into the translation problems found in these texts. The translation problems are categorized into stylistic errors (spelling errors, syntactic and grammatical errors, expression or word choice errors) and other errors (historical background information, wrong symbols) for the analysis. With the co-hosting of the 2002 World Cup in Japan and Korea, many public organizations in Korea including Korea Tourism Corporation, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Cultural Heritage Administration are making efforts to correct typographical mistakes and other errors in foreign language brochures and signs, as a measure to improve Korea s international image. As a result, there have been remarkable improvements. However, the result of this study reveals that despite a lot of concerted and focused efforts, there still remains many areas for improvement in terms of translation errors and other problems. The conclusion reached after years of studying and analyzing the problems seen in Japanese translation of tourist information texts is that the best way to ensure that the tourist information texts contain no errors is as follows; First, care should be given from the stage when the Korean source text is produced, so that he contents are accurate and reliable. Second, the translator needs to translate faithfully to the source texts. Lastly, proofreading of the translation by a native speaker and final checking of the printed version and contents right before sending the final text to the printer are absolutely imperative.
