국문 초록

과거 미국의 식민지로서 필리핀은 동남아시아 국가 중 모더니티의 최전방에 위치해 왔다. 미국에서 유행한 모든 것이 거의 동시대적으로 필리핀에서도 유행했다. 로큰롤 역시 미국에서 등장한지 얼마 되지 않아 1950년대에 필리핀에 상륙했다. 이 논문은 1960년에서 2000년까지 피노이(필리핀) 대중음악의 40년 역사에 관한 연구다. 이 시기는 시대정신을 반영하는 장르와 스타일에 따라 네 개의 소시기로 구분할 수 있다. 1960년대는 로큰롤이 번성하면서 마닐라를 중심으로 재즈와 쿤디만 등 기존의 유행음악과 경쟁한 시기다. 1970년대는 로큰롤의 진화형태인 록이 새로운 패션과 라이프스타일을 동반하면서 널리 확산되었다. 1980년대에는 마닐라 전역에 디스코텍이 확산되면서 디스코 열풍이 불어닥쳤다. 그리고 1990년대에는 힙합이 새로운 라이프스타일과 사운드를 앞세워 새로운 모더니티의 상징으로 군림하였다.

영문 초록

As a former colony of American power, the Philippines was always at the forefront in terms of modernity compared to its Southeast Asian neighboring countries. What was “in” in the United States could be found almost at the same time in the Philippines for the cultural and political connections. Rock ‘n roll arrived in the Philippines in the 1950s, while jazz was appropriated earlier than that date. This paper studies forty years of Pinoy (or Philippine) popular music, from the 1960s to the 1990s, which can be divided into a number of genres and styles that represent their zeitgeist. The 1960s is the decade when rock ’n’ roll flourished with the rise of dozens of combos, or smaller simplified bands, across Metro Manila, competing with jazz and Kundiman. In the 1970s, while rock‘n roll was still there with fanatic fans and players, a new music genre, which was rock, arrived with the widespread of new fashion and lifestyle. In the1980s disco was prevalent across the country competing with other music genres with the mushrooming of discotheques for dance in Metro Manila. And in the1990s hip-hop reigned that marked a novel lifestyle and sound modernity.
