한국과 미국 주요 일간지의 성폭력 범죄보도에 대한 비교 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 한·미 주요일간지의 성폭력 범죄보도의 경향과 문제점을 내용분석방식을 통해 분석하였다. 분석대상 일간지는 <조선일보>, <한겨레>, <워싱턴포스트>, <뉴욕타임스>였으며, 분석 시기는 한국에서 성폭력 범죄가 사회적으로 크게 이슈화된 2008년 12월부터 2012년 10월로 설정하였다. 4개 신문의 기사 1708건을 추출하여 기사제목, 이미지, 뉴스정보원, 뉴스프레임을 중점적으로 분석하였다. 분석결과, 분석에 포함된 한국의 일간지에서는성폭력 범죄보도에 선정적인 기사제목과 이미지의 사용빈도가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이에 반해 미국의 주요 일간지는 선정적 기사제목보다는 정보적 기사제목을 두드러지게 사용하였으며, 이미지의 사용이 적은 것으로 나타났다. 한국의 분석대상 일간지는 검·경찰 및 전문가의 발언을 인용함에도 불구하고 가해자와 피해자의 진술에 따옴표를 사용하면서 마치 기자가 현장을 목격한 것 같은 묘사방식을 사용하였다. 반면, 미국 일간지는 경찰이 발표한 사건내용에 대해 주요 정보만을 중심으로 축약하여 인용하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 뉴스프레임을 1차 프레임과 2차 프레임으로 구분하여 분석을 실시한 결과, 한국의 주요 일간지는 성폭력 범죄과정을 상세하게 묘사하거나 범죄 관련자들의 신상·정보공개에 대한 뉴스프레임이 많은 것으로 나타났다. 미국의 주요 일간지는 범죄 과정에 대해 사실 중심의 뉴스프레임을 주로 사용하며, 범죄관련자들의 정보공개도 적어 성폭력 범죄보도에 있어서 신중한 태도를 보인 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 한국의 언론은 향후 성폭력 범죄보도와 관련된 구체적인 보도준칙이나 윤리강령을 마련하거나, 성범죄 보도기사에 대한 모니터링을 통한 취재 및 보도 방식의 개선이 필요한 것으로 보인다.

영문 초록

This study intended to investigate tendencies and problems of sexual crime news reports on Korean and American daily newspapers with news frame approach. This study analyzed a total of 1708 news articles selected from two Korean daily newspapers (ChosunIlbo, Hankyoreh), and two American daily newspapers (Washington Post, New York Times). The sample was composed of sexual crime-related news articles from December, 2008 to October, 2010. The time period was selected because comparatively severe sexual crimes occurred and received extensive attention from news media in Korean society. The unit of analysis was a news report. The present study analyzed headlines, images, news sources, and news frames. The results showed that the Korean newspapers used more sensational headlines and images than informative ones, while counterparts in America mostly utilized informative ones. Although Korean newspapers quoted interviews from the police or experts, they used direct quotations to deliver criminal or victim’s words like eyewitnesses at the sexual crime scenes. However, American newspapers indirectly quoted essential informations obtained from the police. Moreover, the results indicated that the Korean newspapers described the process of sexual crimes in detail, and occasionally used of criminals and victims’ personal information-disclosure frame. On the contrary, the American newspapers used unbiased fact-related frame, showing careful approach in revealing criminal and victim’s information. Thus, the present study suggests that Korean journalism needs to make concrete guideline and ethnic code to improve journalism practice in covering sexual crimes.
