국문 초록

甲骨文과 金文의 서법 특징을 논하기 어려운 이유 중 하나는 새긴 글씨가 毛筆書寫를 반영한다는 직접적 증거를 찾기 어렵기 때문이다. 단지 銘文에 드러난 시각적 인상과 우리의 경험에 기초하여, 銘文을 만들기 위하여 예리한 도구를 이용한 書寫 활동이 있었다고 상상할 수 있을 뿐이다. 그러나 어떤 銘文은 그 글자 획의 변화가 매우 다양하여서 毛筆書寫의 서법 특징을 언급하여야만 가장 잘 설명할 수 있다. 이 논문에서 본 연구자는 대부분의 경우 毛筆書寫가 청동기 銘文을 주조하는 과정의 기초 작업이었기 때문에, 예리한 도구로 새긴 銘文은 毛筆書法을 이해하는 중요한 자료로 사용될 수 있다는 점을 제시한다. 심미적 측면과 기술적 측면에서 金文과 毛筆書法의 연계는 戰國時代 이전의 서법 활동을 戰國時代의 서법 활동과의 연결시켜 논의하는 것을 가능하게 할 뿐만 아니라, 戰國時代 이전의 毛筆書寫에 대한 고고학적 자료의 공백을 보완해 준다. 商나라 書寫의 시작부터 毛筆書寫는 일상생활에 필요한 기록을 위하여 사용되었고, 또한 甲骨文과 金文 같은 특별한 목적으로 만든 銘文의 토대였을 것이다. 그러나 이 시기의 썩기 쉬운 재료에 붓으로 쓴 글씨는 현재 남아 있지 않다. 金文에 대한 毛筆書寫의 역할과 관련해서 제기한 본 연구자의 가설은 戰國時代 이전의 毛筆書法을 설명하는 길을 제공할 뿐만 아니라, 書寫 전통의 측면에서 戰國時代의 毛筆書法은 그 이전 시기 金文書法과 연결되어 있다는 가능성을 열어 준다.

영문 초록

One of the difficulties in arguing for the calligraphic qualities of inscriptions on durable materials, e.g., bronze and stone media, is that the inscriptions lack direct evidence of brush-and-ink writing. Based on the visual reflection of the inscriptions on such media, we can only imagine that the writing activities for the inscriptions were performed by carving with a stylus. However, some inscriptions seem very clearly to exemplify modulations that are most persuasively explained with reference to brush writing. I asserts in this article that inscriptions by carving with a stylus can be used for insights into writing by a brush, because brush writing was, in most cases, the basis for the engraving process of bronze inscriptions. This association of non-brush calligraphy with brush calligraphy, in both aesthetic and technical aspects, makes it possible to discuss scribal practices in Warring States brush calligraphy in relation to earlier non-brush calligraphy on bronzes, and to fill to some degree the lacuna of brush calligraphy prior to the Warring States period. From the beginning of writing in the Shang dynasty, brush writing may have been the basis of everyday documents, as well as of ceremonial inscriptions. However, this brush writing on perishable materials has not survived archaeologically. However, my hypothesis on the role of brush calligraphy in bronze inscriptions not only provides a way to explain the vacuum of brush calligraphy during the pre-Warring States era but also opens the possibility that Warring States brush calligraphy relates to the previous non-brush calligraphy in terms of scribal tradition.
