The Effects of Rapid Toilet Training on Independent Voids and Mands for Preschool Students with Developmental Disabilities

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 고속용변훈련(rapid toilet training)이 발달장애를 가진 유아원생에게 미치는 효과를 분석하였다. 미국 유아원에 다니고 있는 유아 3명이 본 실험에 참가하였으며 실험참가자들은 정부로부터 재정지원을 받는 사립학교의 특수학급에 소속된 유아들이었다. 연구자는 독립변인과 종속변인간의 기능적 관계를 분석하기위해 단일대상연구설계법 중에 하나인 대상자간 지연된 중다기초선 설계법(time- lagged multiple baseline across participants design)을 적용하였다. 본 실험에서는 일상 학급시간에 아동이 화장실의 아동용 변기에 독립적으로 용변을 보는 횟수, 바지에 용변을 보는 횟수, 그리고 화장실에 가고 싶다고 음성요구 행동인 맨드를 보이는 횟수를 종속변인으로 측정하였다. 종속변인의 변화를 위한 독립변인으로 Azrin과 Foxx(1971)의 고속용변훈련에 바탕을 두고 수정된 절차가 사용되었다. 중재기 동안에 연구자는 실험참가자를 회기선에 따라 미리 정해진 간격마다 화장실을 이용하고 이때 화장실에 가고 싶다고 요구하는 음성행동(맨드)를 교수하였다. 또한 실험참가자가 화장실에서 용변을 성공적으로 수행하였을 때 사회적ㆍ유형 강화제를 제공함으로써 목표행동을 강화해주었다. 실험결과에 따르면 모든 실험참가자의 화장실에 가기위해 적절하게 요구하는 맨드반응과 화장실에서의 성공적 용변행동이 증가하였으며, 반대로 바지에 용변을 보는 행동이 감소하고 실험의 종료시점에서는 더 이상 바지에 용변을 보는 행동을 보이지 않는 효과를 보여주었다.

영문 초록

This study examines the effects of rapid toilet training on three preschool students diagnosed with developmental disabilities. The participants attended a self-contained classroom of a publicly funded private preschool. A time-lagged multiple-baseline design was employed across the participants to identify the functional relationships between dependent and independent variables. The dependent variables were numbers of independent elimination in the toilet, accidents, and independent mands (i.e., self-initiation) emitted per day. The independent variable was the rapid toilet training procedure modified based mainly on Azrin and Foxx (1971). During the intervention, the participants went to the bathroom in predetermined intervals and had opportunities to emit mands. They received edible and social reinforcement for successful elimination in the toilet. The result shows that the rapid toilet training procedure significantly reduced the number of accidents and increased the independent void in the bathroom and mands for toilet use.
