여성기술인력과 공학교육, 성인지적 관점에서의 평가

국문 초록

기술융합의 패러다임이 대두하면서 의사소통능력, 리더십, 유연한 사고 등을 요구하는 융합기술능력인재에 대한 관심이 커지면서 여성기술인력에 대한 수요가 증가하는 추세이다. 그러나 여성기술인력의 비중은 11.9%에 지나지 않는 실정으로 최근 여러 연구들에서는 이의 원인을 대학교육에서 찾고자 한다. 대학의 공학교육이 여성기술인력을 양성하고 배출하는데 제 역할을 하지 못하거나, 혹은 여성을 공학으로 유도하는데 적극적이지 못하기 때문이라는 것이다. 게다가 수적으로도 적은 여학생들이 재학 중에 다른 전공으로 이탈하거나 중도하차 하는 등의 문제가 지속되는 이유는 공학교육이 성에 대한 이해와 고려를 충분히 하지 않은 채 이루어지기 때문이라고 주장한다. 따라서 이들은 여성주의적 시각, 혹은 여성만을 위한 시각에서의 교육이 필요한 것이 아니라 남녀학생에게 상대의 성에 대해 올바로 이해하게 하고 이들의 능력을 서로 조화롭게 배양하게 하는 성인지적 교육을 강조한다. 한 쪽 성만 지배적이거나, 다른 한 성에 대한 충분한 이해와 고려가 없다면, 과학기술지식과 능력에 더하여 의사소통능력이나 창의성, 감성 등이 골고루 융합될 수 없기 때문이다. 그렇다면, 우리의 공학교육은 어떠한가? 성인지적 관점에서 공학교육이 이루어지고 있는가? 대학에서는 양성균형적 관점을 가진 융합기술인재를 육성하고, 여성기술인력을 배출하는데 기여하고 있는가? 이 연구는 이러한 문제제기를 통해 현 공학교육을 성인지적 관점에서 평가한다. 구체적인 평가 영역은‘교수전략’, ‘학습자참여활동’, ‘공학분위기 또는 문화’의 세 가지 이며, 이들 요소가 학생들의 성인지 학습성과에 어떠한 영향을 가지는지에 대해서도 검토한다. 이러한 작업의 결과는 여성기술인력의 배출뿐만 아니라 양성융합적 역량을 가진 공학인재 양성을 위한 정책 제언의 기초로 의의를 가질 것이다.

영문 초록

Despite general increases in women’s representation in our society, women’s representation in the technology market is not approaching parity with men’s. Increasing the number of women will increase the qualified labor pool that our society depends on to drive the innovation and product development in technology market that is so key to the our economy. Also, a gender-balanced workforce is more likely to understand the need and concerns of a wider segment of the customer base, and will design products accordingly (Wulf, 1999). However, women engineers account for less than 12% of the technology workforce. Despite the growing need for qualified applicants for engineer positions, the number of women in advanced careers actually continues to decline. Some scholars found out the reasons from the universities’ engineering courses. They point out the biggest problem is that the current engineering courses (culture) doesn’t consider ‘gender-balance’. In this context, this study also tries to find the reason from engineering educational experiences in universities. Namely, this study evaluates the current engineering education in the gender-sensitive perspective. Concretely, this study examines the effects of ‘teaching strategies’, ‘students’ learning activities’ and ‘culture/environment of the courses.’ on the students’ learning performance. Finally, based on these results, this study suggests some basis of engineering education policies for cultivating women engineers of talent.
