미국의 동남아시아 연구사

국문 초록

본 논문은 미국의 동남아시아학의 현황과 과제를 살펴보고자 작성되었다. 미국의 동남아 연구는 냉전이라는 시대 상황 속에서 동남아시아의 공산화를 막고 친미 블록을 수립하기 위한 전략적 필요에 의해 시작되었다. 미국의 동남아 학자들은 동남아에 대한 기존의 유럽 식민사관을 해체하고 현지인의 창조적 역동성을 바탕으로 지역의 자율적 역사를 구성하기 위해 노력했다. 이렇게 발전해 온 미국의 동남아 학은 다음과 같은 특징을 가진다. 첫째, 미국의 동남아 학자들은 동남아 출신 학자들을 얽어매어 온 민족주의나 애국심의 굴레에서 자유롭기 때문에 그들보다 역사를 객관적으로 바라 볼 수 있는 위치에 있다고 할 수 있다. 둘째, 이러한 입장에서 미국의 동남아 학자들은 자율적 역사구성을 목표로 사회 발전에 있어서 "현지인들의 재능"을 찾는데 집중했다. 셋째, 지역학이라는 배경에서 출발한 미국의 동남아 학자들은 국민국가를 연구의 경계로 상정했고, 이에 따라 초경계적인 네트워크의 실재를 무시하는 연구를 진행했다. 넷째, 이들은 개발에 대한 서구의 단선적 사관을 고수했고, 따라서 동남아의 자본화, 도시화, 산업화 등의 궤적을 추적하여 서구의 진화론적 발전사와 유사한 역사를 재구성했다. 마지막으로, 이데올로기, 종교, 젠더 등의 이슈에 대해 미국 학자들은 서구의 보편적 가치를 별다른 섬세한 수정 없이 동남아에 적용했다고 볼 수 있다. 미국 동남아학에서 나타난 이러한 한계는 미래의 동남아 학자들에게 국가 경계를 뛰어넘어 보다 작거나 광범위한 초경계적 실재에 대한 연구, 동남아식 발전 모형 수립, 그리고 보다 로칼 맥락에 부합하는 가치와 담론에 대한 섬세한 교정 등을 요구하고 있다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

This paper aims at investigating the current state and future direction of Southeast Asian studies in the U.S. Southeast Asian studies in the U.S. has begun with the strategic needs of the U.S. government, which was attempting to block the Communization in the region of Southeast Asia. U.S. Scholars in the field of Southeast Asian studies have deconstructed European colonial perspectives on the region and established an autonomous history, which emphasized local dynamics and initiatives. Southeast Asian studies in the U.S. have shown some characteristics including: the U.S. scholars in the field are relatively free from the reign of patriotism or nationalism, which have limited the views of Southeast Asian scholars. This made the U.S. scholars to see the history of Southeast Asia from more objective perspectives. Second, based on this stance, the U.S. scholars have focused on finding "local genius" in the process of local development. Third, as Southeast Asian studies in the U.S. has started as the area studies, most scholars confined their research frames to the boundary of nation-states. Accordingly, cross-boundary realities have often been neglected to be studied. Fourth, these scholars have adhered to the Western-oriented linear history perspective, based on which they reconstructed local history by examining the processes such as capitalizaiton, urbanization, or industrialization. Finally, on the issues of ideology, religion, and gender, the U.S. scholars have applied Western values into the region without further specification. The limitations that the U.S. scholarship have sustained are now waiting for their rectification in future scholarship. The future themes will deal with wider or smaller cross-boundary researches, local models on the concepts of development, and more sophisticated and localized concepts and discourses on ideology, religion, and gender issues.
