성조의 청취적 인식과 실험 음성학적 실측의 상관성

국문 초록

성조는 토박이의 인식 차원에 존재하는 변별적이고 대립적인 음고를 기본 단위로 한다는 점에서 물리적 차원의 음고 지표와는 그 성격이 다르다. 따라서 성조론에서 음성학적인 음고 지표를 이용할 때는 세심한 주의가 있어야 한다. 이런 점에서 개별 음절에 실현되는 음고에 대한 청취적 인식과 음성학적 실측 사이의 관계가 명확하게 규명될 필요가 있다. 이 논문에서는 성조 연구에 있어서 연구자의 청취적 인식과 음향 음성학적 실측 사이의 상관관계를 검토하고, 이러한 관계에 대한 인식을 바탕으로 할 때, 두 방법이 상호 보완적 협력으로 성조의 본질을 드러내는 데 기여할 수 있음을 보이고자 하였다. 음고에 대한 음향 음성학적 실측 자료는 연구자의 직관과 청취력에 의존하여 수행되는 성조 연구의 신뢰성을 높이고, 성조 체계의 기술 과정에서 발생하는 문제를 해결하는 데 필요한 단서를 제공하는 등 매우 큰 유용성을 가진다. 그러나 성조론에서 유의미한 대립적 음고는 말소리의 물리적인 높이 자체가 아니라 그것을 심리 차원에서 등급화한 결과물이기 때문에 이러한 음성학적 실측 자료에만 전적으로 의존하여 성조 체계를 기술하고 설명할 수는 없다. 성조에 대한 음운론적 연구를 위해서는 이러한 실측 자료가 설명력 높은 음운 이론에 비추어 신중하게 분석되고 해석되어야 한다.

영문 초록

This research aims to examine how the physical and the cognitive dimensions of pitch are related, and explain the relation between the phonetic and phonological studies of tone. Tone is a product of cognitive process, in which the native speakers recognize contrastive toneme system from physical pitches on each syllable. ‘High tone’, ‘Low tone’, or ‘Rising tone’ is not designated automatically from the numerical value of ‘fundamental frequency’, but is derived from the psychological ranking process in the speaker’s mind. Speakers of tonal languages recognize tonemes by contrasting pitches on each syllable and referring them to tonal patterns of the language. The phonetic data of the pitch on each syllable can provide some help for the studies on tone that have been, so far, carried out with researcher’s intuition and listening skills. These data can enhance the reliability of phonological description and explanation on the tone. And they also can give clues for solving problems related to the tonal system. The tonal systems, however, cannot be described depending on these phonetic data only. These data need to be analysed carefully from the perspectives of appropriate phonological theories.
