영문 초록

This paper provides a new account on the emergence of the palatal consonants and the palatalization processes from a diachronic perspective. For this purpose, we employ the frameworks of Optimality Theory (McCarthy & Prince 1995) and Dispersion Theory (Flemming 1995, 1996). During the discussion, we first argue that we can account for the emergence of the palatal/palatalized consonants by postulating several constraints for maintaining phonemic contrasts and their interactions with other constraints. We also show that the promotion and demotion of certain constraints are responsible for the diachronic differences of the consonantal inventories and the palatalization patterns.
