Vincent van Gogh said that colour itself represents something. Paul Gauguin told that color is emotionally recognized and used as a silent language to stimulate instinct reaction. Purple is derived from the mixing of blue and red, therefore it has both opposite attributes in psychological, symbolic, emotional way. This neutral color has extensive Color Gamut and it has the ambiguity concurrent with various emotions based on each tone. For this reason, Purple should be recognized and studied as serial colors based on each tone rather than an individual color. Purple is associated with both positive and negative images; nobility, divinity, mystery, tranquillity, voluptuosity, feminineness, fragrance, and also fragility, sadness, melancholy, death(sable of royal family), symbol of corrupted power, and superstition etc. Kenneth E. Boulding conceptualized so-called image as a picture that each individuals visualize towards objects, representing each individual’s subjective understanding for certain objects and showing its favour and reliability. The word, emotion is often quoted and the general publics have tendency to be emotionally attached rather than perceive objects visually. This research quantitatively analyzed the favour for Purple based on color names of objects established by Korea Industry Standard(KS A0011:2005) and the difference of perception based on gender. The research targeted 85 university students(41males, 45 females), who have ability to perceive color immediately, having average visual sense and favour for color, expressing themselves distinctively. The research period was 30 days from September1,2007 until October1, and was designed to prove the hypothesis given below. Statistics procedure was conducted by using SPSSWIN 12.0 program. The outcome of analysis is that the research on the emotional image showed that Purple represented in the following order; maturity, voluptuosity, mystery and male students favored purple in terms of preference. The Munsell conversion value of No. 56 sample, which was the most favored color in the Color Gamut of Purple was 5P 7/7.5 and this was Pale Purple. It was indicated that the least favourable colors are Red Purple, dark Red Purple and Purple Blue. And the boundary colors in neighbour of Purple were least favored. The perception of university students in the 20’s for Purple was exactly what the Korea Industry Standard presented and gender did not make any meaningful difference. Based on the survey of emotional image of Purple, favourable colors can be applied to accessories and clothing. And the further research is needed to follow up on emotional image for color as well as on the subjects that this thesis did not carry.
