영문 초록

  The purpose of this study is to present a pedagogical model for teaching English poetry in conjunction with the cinema. This pedagogical method of using cinema to teach English poetry is a heuristic, student-centered approach, similar to the reader-response theory of reading, or Paolo Freiri"s" problem-posing method of teaching. By experiencing how poetry is used in the movies, students can learn and experience how poetry can be used in real life. In conjunction with the film, the poetry can become a powerful tool for English education, also.
  In this paper, I categorize the films Dead Poets Society and Dangerous Minds with the theme of "self-reliance," and study Walt Whitman"s poems "Song of Myself 52," and Dylan Thomas"s poem "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night." from the movies. I compare pedagogical methods in these movies since their social settings are different while the pursuit of "self-reliance" ethic is the same. Under the theme of "technology and human civilization," I study the film A.I.,: Artificial Intelligence along with Yeats" poem "The Stolen Child" from the movie. In the film, the poem plays an important role, revealing the theme of the movie which is to criticize the in-humanity of technology. By the same token, the movie enhances understanding of the meaning of the poem. Applying this method of using the films to teach English poetry in class-room proves it a powerful tool to teach English, English poetry, as well as culture.
