국문 초록

이 연구는 음성언어와 읽기 초기 과정과의 관계를 밝혀보고자 하는 것으로, 구체적으로 말하면 언어간 비교를 통해서 음성언어의 특성과 철자-발음간의 관련성을 밝혀보고자 하는 것이다. 언어의 특성이 음운적인 인식 능력의 발달에 영향을 미친다는 사실을 고려하면 언어에 따라서 철자-발음 대응과정의 발달양상이나 속도가 다를 것이라고 생각할 수 있으며 또한 언어간의 차이에도 불구하고 공통과정이나 기제가 있을 것도 기대할 수 있다. 이러한 가정을 검토하기 위해서 같은 자모문자에 속하면서도 상이한 음운적 철자적 특성을 지닌 영어와 한글의 두 언어를 선택했다. 문자 터득의 초기 과정 피험자들의 철자-발음 대응과정에 대한 언어간 비교를 통해서 두 종류의 언어활동 즉 음성언어와 문자언어가 상호작용을 하며 이 상호작용에 내재된 보편적인 기제를 볼 수 있었다. 즉 음절보다는 크며 음소보다는 작은 중간정도의 크기에 해당하는 음운 단위가 표상된다. 그러나 모국어가 영어인 피험자들은 3성음절(CVC)을 초두자음-각운(C+VC)으로, 모국어가 한국어인 피험자들은 음절체-말미자음(CV+C)으로 분절한 후 발음과 대응시키는 상이한 양상을 보였다. 이것은 두 언어의 음절구조의 차이 즉 영어의 경우 초두자음/각운, 한국어의 경우 음절체/말미자음이라는 것이 철자·발음 대응과정에 반영되는 것이라고 해석할 수 있을 것이다. 그러나 두 언어권 피험자들의 수행 차이가 과제요인이나 피험자요인 등에 기인하였을 가능성이 있어서 이러한 요인들을 통제한 체계적인 연구가 요구된다.

영문 초록

The aim of this paper is to present the nature of relationship between the oral language and the reading. More specifically we want to show the relationship between the characteristics of oral language and the development of spelling-sound correspondence through the cross-language comparison. Considering the effect of oral and written language on the development of the phonological awareness, we can infer that there might be the possibility of the different developmental pattern or speed in the process of spelling-sound correspondence in different languages and there might be also the possibility of a common process or mechanism in spite of language differences. In order to examine these possibilities we chose to compare two languages, English and Korean, which are the same alphabetic scripts but each language has a different phonological, orthographic feature. Through this cross-Linguistic comparisons we expect to see the interactive figure of two kind of human language activity - oral language and written language - and the universal mechanism which is embedded in these interaction. There were common processes that the phonological intermediate unit is represented in the process of spelling-sound correspondence. However English-speaking subjects showed the early orthographic recognition unit in onset-rime (C1-VC2) level and Korean-speaking beginners showed the orthographic recognition unit in syllable body-coda (C1V-C2) level. These data can be interpreted to mean that the characteristics of syllable structure in verbal language is represented in the print-sound correspondence. But there are some possibilities that the differences of the performance pattern between two language subjects may be due to task factor, subject factor etc. Therefore additional systematic studies must be done to control some factor and to get a certain conclusion.
