One of the questions doctors are often asked is, “Why did you choose your specialty?”
For me, the answer is simple: “Because urologic surgery is fascinating.”

When performing circumcision in children, delicate precision is required. By contrast, operating on patients with urologic cancers demands opening the abdomen, working with both hands soaked in blood, and removing large organs.

When urinary stones or tumors obstruct the urinary tract, fine endoscopic instruments are inserted, and lasers are used to remove the lesion with utmost precision. Because the urinary passage must not be damaged during this process, exquisite technical skill is required. Some even compare the sensation of such delicate maneuvering to the tactile thrill of fishing.

In recent years, robotic surgery has become an integral part of the field. Robot-assisted procedures are now widely applied, particularly in cancer surgeries involving the prostate, kidney, and bladder.

Urology is fundamentally a surgery-centered specialty. It encompasses traditional open surgical techniques such as incision and suturing, as well as minimally invasive endoscopic procedures performed within the urinary tract to minimize tissue damage.

Thus, urologists must master both approaches: performing aggressive surgery to remove diseased tissue on one day, and carrying out delicate endoscopic procedures that preserve as much tissue as possible on another. At times, forceful precision is required; at other times, careful finesse is essential.

This dynamic interplay between opposing roles generates a unique sense of tension. Within that tension lies the profound satisfaction of being a urologist. Like myself, all urologists take great pride as surgeons, performing diverse procedures grounded in highly advanced technical expertise.
