Voiding refers to the process in which urine produced by the kidneys is stored in the bladder and then excreted from the body through the urethra.

Voiding dysfunction encompasses all issues that arise during the process of expelling urine from the body. This includes situations such as urinating too frequently, prolonged time to void, or involuntary leakage of urine.

In men, common causes include benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatitis, urethral stricture, and urinary stones. In women, overactive bladder, urinary incontinence, cystitis, and bladder pain syndrome are frequent causes.

Urine is produced in the kidneys and stored in the bladder. When the bladder fills, nerve signals trigger bladder contraction, allowing urine to be expelled. This process is intricately controlled by the nervous system, enabling individuals to feel relief after voiding or to hold urine even when the urge arises. Therefore, even in the absence of anatomical or structural abnormalities, issues with the nervous system can cause discomfort during voiding.

The organs involved in voiding include the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra, which are the same in both men and women. However, men have the prostate, which produces semen and is located between the bladder and the urethra, while women have the uterus, which serves reproductive functions and is situated between the bladder and the rectum. These anatomical structures can compress or obstruct the urinary pathway, leading to voiding discomfort even without nerve-related problems.
